My First Year Teaching

I had 5 preps plus I was in charge of the service learning program, the international students, and the social justice club.

if you are a teacher, never stop experimenting and taking risks.  

From the very beginning, he encouraged me to think outside the box and experiment.

Students would research issues they were interested in and then present to the whole school about the issue. They also organized fundraiser and sent money and goods to organizations of their choosing.

Inspired by my students' activism and drive, I decided to join the Peace Corps

At first that was overwhelming, but he trusted me as a professional and I soon discovered my passions.

As the service learning coordinator, I was allowed to organize monthly service learning activities where students served meals at a local homeless shelter, cooked dinner for a half-way house, played games at the senior center, and organized a blood drive.

I spent 2 years living and working in the Philippines where I taught English. I lived in a rural rice farming community with no running water and spotty electricity.

And none of that would have happened if I didn't have a boss who encouraged me to take risks and experiment. 

The service learning program, which had been lacking in the previous years, was suddenly thriving and I always had a full list of students signed up.

That program initiated a sense of activism in our students and they requested to start a social justice club.
