Fluency

My Aunt May used to live in Norway, which is a country in Europe. Every day she would take the railway to work, where she was a tailor. A tailor is a person who gets paid to make and design clothes that fit a person exactly. Aunt May's tailor shop was on the main road in a quaint town, across the way from the rail station. People would come from all over to praise Aunt May's clothes. They couldn't wait to see what she would design each day!

Teacher Tip By listening to the recording, you can notice: • fluency expression - do they use any intonation in their voice? • fluency accuracy - are they reading the words correctly? • fluency rate - are they reading an appropriate pace? • fluency smoothness - are they able to blend words or are they still choppy in their decoding?

It is important to understand the definition of each pillar to ensure that it is embedded into your daily instruction.

Fluency is the ability to read text quickly and accurately based on the reader’s understanding and ability to decode words. Fluent readers must also have a stored bank of non-decodable words that they are able to read so that they can focus attention on the content and meaning of what they are reading.

The National Reading Panel identified 5 critical components, or pillars, that must be mastered in order to become fluent in literacy.
