Vocabulary is the collection of words that are known and understood by the learner. In many cases, vocabulary is first developed orally as students hear and repeat words and associate meaning with objects in their environment. Adding new words to vocabulary is important in order to develop comprehension.

low-frequency words that are content specific
academic vocabulary; high-frequency, content-specific that are cross-curricular and many times multiple meaning words
basic, familiar words that students use frequently in daily conversation
