Mid-winter is nesting season for bald eagles, when they are seeking out the best nesting sites or returning to the same nests they’ve used for generations. During mid- to late winter, these raptors incubate their eggs, which will hatch just over a month after being laid. It was one particular bald eagle’s nest that spawned National Save the Eagles Day in the village of Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, in 2015. Late in 2014, Skymark Development Corporation highlighted a study arguing that a landfill near an eagles’ nest posed community health risks. The nesting pair, fondly named Alice and Al, had nested along Overpeck Creek since at least 2011. Part of the solution to the local health risks was to remove the tree the eagles nested in. When that solution was made public, the community and the Bergen County Audubon Society organized Save the Eagles Day on January 10, 2015.&nbsp; Eventually, an agreement was reached to preserve part of the land as an eagle park. For several years, Alice and Al continued to nest in the same location, and eventually a new eagle pair took up residence in the same nest (as is common with raptors when one mate dies or opts to nest elsewhere). To this day, the eagles’ nest is still celebrated with local “Return of the Eagles” events to raise awareness not only of local bald eagles, but of the comeback of all bald eagles and to support the Endangered Species Act.

Louis Braille invented the reading system of raised dots in 1824. Born on January 4, 1809, in France, Louis would lose his sight after an accident in his father's harness shop at the age of three. He would later attend the National Institute for Blind Children in Paris. There, his interest in music would benefit him when at the age of 10 he would meet Charles Barbier, a captain in Napolean's army. The captain taught the students about a communication code using dots called Night Writing. Combining his knowledge of music and the inspiration of code communication, Louis Braille invented a 6 dot fingertip reading system when he was only 15 years old.

Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes were the co-inventors of Bubble Wrap in 1957. They were trying to create a textured wallpaper by putting two pieces of plastic shower curtain through a heat-sealing machine. They were disappointed by the results: a sheet of plastic film with trapped air bubbles. However, the inventors did not quit. They were granted the&nbsp;first of several patents&nbsp;for the process and equipment for embossing and laminating materials. They then started thinking of other uses, more than 400 in fact, including greenhouse insulation. In 1958 they decided upon packing and shipping material, and the rest is history!

Cans were invented as a solution for hunger in combat. Nicholas Appert, a Paris resident and chef saw this opportunity and took it. Working for French nobility, he studied different methods of food preservation until he presented his creation to the Directory, which consisted of a Champagne bottle preserved with cheese and lime and built on previous preservation techniques. His factory progressed from bottles to glass containers and then eventually to cans. These preserves were shipped all over through the French navy. Peter Durand decided he wanted to capitalize on the preservation of food by patenting it and intended on expanding even further from Appert’s idea by using tinplate. Once the British saw that the French were using preservation, they believed they needed to as well. Soon after, Bryan Donkin and John Hall set up the first commercial canning factory in Britain in 1812. Tin can preservation became a crucial element for the history of combat and war as well as helping solve hunger issues. In New York, about a century later, the Max Ams Machine Company of New York patented the double-seam process used in most modern food cans and helped boom the future of industrialized food all the way to the modern day.
