The land we live, work, and play on belongs to the Anishinaabe people. Their land is connected to spiritual beliefs, traditional knowledge and teachings, fundamental to cultural reproduction, and they form strong relationships with it. The land encompasses culture, relationships, ecosystems, social systems, spirituality, and law. Throughout my life, I wasn't very aware of the myriad of opportunities this land has given me, and I am now grateful for the privileges I've had while being here, like going to school, talking with my friends and family, and participating in community activities, etc.
I’ve been on this land for 13 years of my life, and have never really acknowledged much of the beauty, significance, and importance of the land we live on. I moved here from Manila, Philippines to Ottawa, Ontario when I was only 1 year old, in 2009. My whole life I was raised in a Catholic household and Catholic schools. I learnt mostly about catholicism and not much about others around the world. My perspectives of the world were limited to only the people in my school and my household.

 Je reconnais que j’ai la responsabilité d’apprendre et de respecter les gens qui connaissent les traditions, les histoires, les perspectives et la culture algonquines. I will make sure to use my voice properly and to be as appreciative of the land and people that I am with. I will continue to make way on my learning journey, and empower the voices of those who teach me more and more every day.
La spiritualité du peuple Anishinaabe est étroitement liée à la terre, au peuple et à la création. Pendant des générations, ils ont été ceux qui ont pris soin de cette terre, car la santé et l’eau sont au cœur de leur culture, et au lieu de les apprécier, nous les avons repoussés. Nous avons repoussé qui ils étaient et avons essayé de les remplacer par une identité que nous approuvons, ce qui est extrêmement mal.

Je n’ai pas eu le temps de finir mon art ! Mais, j’ai pu mettre quelques notes de musique et une planète dans les cercles de mon art. J’ai décidé de les mettre à cause de mon amour pour l’astronomie et pour la musique. J’écoute toujours de la musique tous les jours et je me sens vraiment heureux et bien dans ma peau. Il m’a aidé à traverser des moments difficiles et je crois que c’est une partie importante de ma vie. L’astronomie est quelque chose que j’ai toujours été intéressé. Ma planète préférée est Saturne et depuis que je suis enfant, c’est ma planète préférée. Si j’avais fini l’art, j’aurais mis un cerisier en fleur et un petit dessin de ma famille et moi. Ma famille est toujours en faveur de qui je suis et m’aide toujours à surmonter tous mes problèmes. Le cerisier représente ma grand-mère, dont l’arbre préféré était un cerisier en fleurs. Elle les a toujours aimés et elle me manque beaucoup. Je crois que ces 4 dessins représentent 4 choses importantes dans ma vie.
