Welcome to 1st Grade

Welcome to 1st grade! My name is Mrs. Jarvis and I love teaching at Antelope Canyon Elementary. This school year is going to be a great year!

Here is a little about me:
I am from Provo, Utah, and stayed in Provo to attend college, where I got my undergraduate degree. I also have a master's degree in curriculum and instruction. I absolutely love teaching. I love getting to know all of your kids, seeing them learn and grow. Outside of school, I love being outdoors, whether that be hiking, biking, or rock climbing.

I am excited to see what an amazing year we will have together in 1st grade!

Classroom Expectations

Come to school happy, healthy, and ready to learn! In our class, we are safe, respectful, and responsible. We focus on these three words and discuss how we can be safe, respectful, and responsible in different ways.

We celebrate successful behavior daily. When a mistake or poor choice is made, we discuss what happened, decide how to make a better choice, and then make a plan. If poor choices continue parents and administration will be involved so we can all work together to support your child.

Phones and Smart Watches

Antelope Canyon's electronic device policy is that "Cellular device use during classroom time, instructional activities and field trips is prohibited. Cellular devices must remain off during these times. Exceptions to this policy may be granted by school administration on a case by case basis to accommodate family emergencies or medical necessity."

The office is amazing at contacting parents and students when needed. If you need to get a message to your child quickly during the school day the office is great at that.

Phones must be kept in backpacks during the school day. Watches can be worn unless they are a distraction. Students will be given 1 warning. If the watch continues to distract from their learning they will need to put it into their backpack. I understand that there may be exceptions to this policy due to medical needs. Please contact me if there are any concerns.

At Home Reading

Take-home books will come home on Monday. We will start these after the first couple weeks of school. Students read the books during the week and return them on Friday. Communication folders will come home weekly on Monday with important papers.

Please spend 20 minutes a day reading at home.
Sight Words: Please take some time to practice reading the Sight words (Heart words) during the week if your child does not know these words. We will provide several activities that you can use to practice these words with your child.
Take-Home Reading: We are sending home take-home library books each week. Students will return them on Friday and then pick new ones again each Monday.
*Reading with your child at home is critical for their reading development. Please read with your child daily.

Curriculum

The programs we will be using this year are FOSS science, ______ for language arts, Math Expressions, Blast Foundations for phonics/spelling, and Walk to Read for reading. We are going to be using the program Second Steps for social and emotional learning. We will be studying different authors throughout the year. During social studies, we will be learning about different communities, maps, important events, and our place in this world.

Get to Know You Bag

I want to get to know each child in my class. The "Get to Know You Bag" will help your child share what makes them amazing. At back to school night on Wednesday, August 16th, your child will get a brown paper bag. There will be instructions on the bag about what to put in it to share with the class. Please return the bag by August 24th. We will spend the first few weeks of school getting to know each other using your child's "Get to Know you Bag".

Birthdays

I know how important your child's birthday is to them, so I want to make sure to recognize them. You do not need to send a treat, but if you choose to, the health department requires that they bring a nut-free store-bought individually wrapped treat. We are a nut-free classroom. You are also welcome to send non-food items like pencils, erasers, stickers, etc. This is especially helpful for students with allergies. Summer birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the school year. Birthday party invitations can not be passed out at school.

Star Student

In our class we spotlight one child a week. The star student will be given a large star to take home to decorate in a way that tells us about them. This can be done through pictures, drawings, words, etc. Please include a photo of the child on the star because these will be displayed in our classroom throughout the year afterwards.

Supplies

The items on the list will be used during the regular school day. The school will furnish these items, but you may choose to provide supplies on a voluntary basis. All supplies that are provided will be shared with the class as a whole.

If you are voluntarily providing these items, please bring them to the school on the first day of school. We will use these supplies as needed throughout the year.
First Grade Supply List
● Water bottle with student’s name clearly marked
● 1 Dozen Pencils
● 1 Box of 24 crayons
● Jumbo glue sticks
● Colored pencils (12 pack)
● Black Expo fine tip markers
● Washable markers

The following items are always welcome and appreciated.
● Sanitizing Wipes
● Tissues
● Hand Sanitizer
● Small Candy (skittles, smarties, starburst, etc.)

Volunteers

I love having volunteers in my classroom. Here are some of the needs that we have in 1st grade.

Take Home Books
Students are provided with books to take home weekly. It would be really helpful if our class had a parent switch out the books weekly on either Friday or Monday.

Data Notebooks
We use data notebooks to show student growth. Having a parent come monthly to help students track data would be amazing!

Class Parties
We also would love to have help with our class parties for Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's day.

Centers
We have center/small group reading time twice a week. Extra help during this time will let me work with small groups. (Monday and Wednesday _____

All volunteers must be fingerprinted. Once you are fingerprinted it will last throughout elementary school. This process can take up to 3 weeks. If you want to volunteer at any point during the school year or go on a field trip start the fingerprinting process soon. You start this process in the office.
