The Austro Hungarian and Russian empire competed for the control of the Balkans. Serbia didn't want to be controlled by the Austro Hungarian empire.

A secret association called "The Black Hand" was planning to kill the archduke and his wife. Gavrilo Princip was in charge to do it.

First, there was an assassination attempt with a bomb, but it bounced off the car, killing innocent people.

By coincidence, a while later he found them on a street and he decided to kill them.

The archduke was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip when he was with his wife.

The Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia. Germany supported Austria-Hungary and Russia, France and Great Britain supported Serbia.
