Poetry Anthology

by Year 5

In their online English lessons this half term, Year 5 have been learning about poetry. They were inspired by two poems in particular: 'In the Tree's Defence' by A F Harrold and 'I'm An Orchestra' by Laura Mucha.

Year 5 learnt about rhyming couplets to create their own poem defending something they love in the style of A F Harrold.

They also learnt about metaphor and created a poem, in the style of Laura Mucha, that compared their own feelings and emotions to something else.

The pupils enjoyed talking about the different emotions they have and how they could describe these with comparisons to other things, such as ice cream or the weather.

This anthology contains at least one poem from each child in Year 5, and is created entirely by the children to celebrate their achievements in their online lessons.

Each pupil decorated their own pages of the anthology and chose pictures and a layout that they thought illustrated their poem best.

In The Guinea Pig's Defence

Guineas are good at what they do,
 They sometimes make a lot of poo.

They make you happy when they squeak,
And love to make a little creek.

They like to have a little mood,
To cheer them up you give them food.

They normally make a lot of trouble,
So they make a noise like a bubble.

They are as sensitive as a queen,
So you really need to keep them clean.

They can’t have a lot of fruit,
So you can always keep them really cute.

You need to handle them twice a day,
To keep them looking their normal way.

I'm An Ice Cream

Sometimes I’m strawberry Ice cream
 Fun and awake Yummy as yum,
 energetic and safe.

And sometimes I’m Vanilla
Sometimes they love me and
 sometimes Icy with nerves.

Sometimes I’m chocolate
Smooth on the tongue
And I have a sharp side which
Isn’t that fun!

Sometimes I’m Pistachio
solitary and sad they don’t 
like me anymore I get 
angry and lonely.

I’m bubble gum Ready for a party
I’m honeycomb I am as busy as a bee
I’m caramel sweet and energetic
I’m mint alive and fresh

I’M AN ICE CREAM!!!

In The Cat's Defence

Cats are good at what they do
But sometimes we pick up poo,

All they do is sleep on you
But sometimes they play with shoes,

They comfort you when your down
And they never seem to frown,

They meow to talk to you
Fat and chubby and like to chew,

They meow all they time
And they really like to climb,

They're so fluffy and so cute
But they never seem to mute!

I am a fridge

Today I am a fajita,
spicy,annoying and hot.
Always going to annoy new people.

But sometimes I am blueberries, 
sometimes sweet and sometimes sour. 
Sweet and kind but sour and mean.

Sometimes I am Milk, 
sleepy and tired, 
trying to sneak a nap and hopefully get some rest.

I am chocolate, kind and bitter,
I am cheese, yellow and happy,
I am ketchup, sweet and salty,
I am pizza kind and helpful,
I am Chilli surprised and unique,
I am strawberry yogurt, nothing but different,
I am a sandwich plain and boring.

They like to sit in my shoe
while im on the loo

You might think this is rude
but this is what cats do

They sleep on my lap
while i have a nap

They hunt at night
not day

So that's what cats do
and turn you into
