The Chardak neither in heaven nor on earth

 Онај исти дан у који се најстарији брат венчавао, он узјаше на вранца, па, баш када су сватови из цркве излазили, долети међу њих, те свога брата, младожењу, удари мало буздованом у леђа, да се одмах с коња преметнуо, па онда одлети опет натраг у чардак. Kад дозна да му се средњи брат жени, а он, у оно исто време кад су сватови из цркве ишли, долети на ђогату, те и средњега брата онако удари, да се одмах с коња преметнуо, па између сватова опет одлети.&nbsp;

The very day his eldest brother was due to get married, the youngest brother leapt onto his black horse and just as the wedding guests were coming&nbsp;out of the church, he ran among them and gave his brother, the bridegroom, a light blow on the back with his mace, so that he fell off his horse. The youngest brother then went straight back into the chardak. When he learned that his middle brother was getting married, at the very moment the wedding guests were coming out of the church, he dashed up on a white horse and struck the middle brother in such a way that he fell off his horse, and ended up among the guests.

По дугоме путовању наиђу на један чардак, који нити је на небу ни на земљи.&nbsp;

On their long journey they came upon a chardak, which was neither up in the sky nor down on the ground.&nbsp;

Kад цар то чује, он се наљути на своја два старија сина и отера их одмах од себе, а њега ожени девојком коју је себи изабрао и остави га након себе да царује.

When the king heard this, he was furious with his two older sons and banished them from his court, marrying the youngest son to the girl of his choice and leaving him his kingdom.&nbsp;

As he went up, he went from one room to the next and eventually arrived at a room where he saw his sister sitting with the dragon fast asleep, resting its head on her lap, while she picked lice from its hair.

Дошавши онде, помисле да неће у ономе чардаку бити њихова сестра, па се одмах стану договарати како би се у њ попели, и после дугог промишљавања и договора, договоре се да један од њих свога коња закоље, и од коже коњске да окроје опуту, па притврдивши један крај од ње за стрелу, да пусте одоздо стрелу из лука да се добро за чардак прихвати, како би се уз њу пети могли.

Kад дође да се пење уз опуту, опет најстарији и средњи не хтедну се пети, него се попне најмлађи.

When the time came to climb up the strap, once again the eldest and middle brothers refused to do it, so it was the youngest who climbed up.

Све ово обишавши и видевши, врати се натраг у ону собу гђе је змај мртав лежао, па га извуче напоље и баци на земљу, а браћа, кад га виде, умало их грозница не ухвати. 

When the brother had passed through all these rooms and seen everything, he went back to the room where the dargon was lying dead and pulled it outside onto the field and threw it on the ground; when the brothers saw this they were completely out of themselves with shock. 

Потом најмлађи брат спусти најпре сестру своју браћи, па онда све три девојке сваку с њезинијем радом, једну за другом; спуштајући девојке браћи, сваку је намјењивао чија ће која бити, а кад спусти трећу, и то ону с квочком и пилићима, он њу за себе намени.

First of all, the youngest brother lowered his sister down to his brothers, and then he lowered all three girls, each with the work she was doing, one after the other.

Kад он и трећи пут замахне да га удари, онда му сестра руком покаже да га удари у живот, и он га удари онамо, и како га удари, змај остане наместу мртав, а царева га кћи стури с крила, па притрчи брату своме, те се с њиме пољуби, па онда, узевши га за руку, стане га водити кроз све собе.&nbsp;Најпре га уведе у једну собу у којој је био један вран коњ за јаслима привезан с цијелијем такумом од чистога сребра. Потом га одведе у другу собу у којој је за јаслима стајао бели коњ с такумом од сухога злата. Најпосле га одведе и у трећу собу где је за јаслима био кулатаст коњ и на њему такум драгим камењем искићен.&nbsp;

When the son waved the mace again, preparing to hit the dragon once more, his sister pointed to the spot where he could deal a deadly blow, and the brother struck him there, and as he did so, the dragon fell down dead on the spot, and king's daughter freed herself from the dragon's wings, ran to her brother, kissed him and then, taking him by the hand, led him through all the rooms. First of all she took him into a room where was a black horse tied to a stall in full harness made of pure silver. Then she took him into another room, where there was a white horse tied to a stall in full harness made of pure gold. Finnaly, she took him into a third room where there was an ash-coloured horse decorated with precious stones.

There was once a king who had three sons and one daughter. For safety, he locked his daughter away in a special room, where he fed her and locked after her as his most valuable treasure.&nbsp;When the girl grew up, one evening she asked her father to let her go out with her brothers for a walk in front of the house, and her father let her go.&nbsp;

However, as soon as she set foot outside the house, a dragon suddenly flew down from the sky and grabbed the girl from between her brothers and carried her off into the clouds.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Био један цар, па имао три сина и једну кћер, коју је у кавезу хранио и чувао као очи у глави. Kад девојка одрасте, једно вече замоли оца да јој допусти да изиђе с браћом мало пред двор у шетњу, и отац јој допусти. Али тек што изиђе пред двор, у један мах долети из неба змај, шчепа девојку између браће и однесе је у облаке.

Браћа отрче брже боље, к оцу и кажу му шта је било, и рекну да би они ради своју сестру потражити.&nbsp;Отац им допусти да иду да је траже, и да им свакоме по коња и остало што треба за пут, и тако они отиду.

Finnaly, learning that the shepherd boy was about to get married to his girl, he mounted a dun horse and rode among the guests just as they were coming out of the church, and struck the bridegroom on the head with his mace so hard that he fell down dead on the spot. The guests then rushed to capture him,

but he made no attempt to escape, instead remaining among then, making no attempt to hide that he was the king's yougest son and not that shepherd's boy, and that the brothers had through jealousy left him in the very chardak where he had found his sister and killed the dragon, all of which had been witnessed by his sister and the three girls.

Напослетку, дознавши да се чобанче његовом девојком жени, узјаше на кулаша, и долети у сватове баш кад су из цркве излазили, те младожењу буздованом удари у главу, да је наместу мртав пао, а сватови онда ђипе да га ухвате, али он не хтедне ни бежати, него остане међу њима, па се покаже да је он најмлађи царев син а не оно чобанче, и да су га браћа из зависти оставила на ономе чардаку у коме је он сестру нашао и змаја убио, а то све засведочи и сестра и оне девојке.

When they got to it, they thought that perhaps their sister might be inside, so they stopped to decide how to climb up to it, and after a lot of thought and discusion, they agree that one of them would slaughter his horse and from the horse's hide they would make a leather strap, and fix one end of this to an arrow and fire the arrow from their bow&nbsp;so that it fixed itself firmly to the chardak, so that they could climb up to it.

Она, кад види брата својега, уплаши се и почне га тихо молити да бежи док се није змај пробудио, али он не хтедне, већ узме буздован, па размахне њиме и удари змаја у главу, а змај иза сна маши се руком на оно место гђе га је он ударио, па рече девојци: “Баш овђе ме нешто уједе”. Kад он то рекне, а царев га син још једном удари у главу, а змај опет рече девојци: “Опет ме нешто овђе уједе.” 

When she saw her brother, she was frightened and quietly begged him to go before the dragon woke up, but he did not agree to this; instead he took his mace and waving in through the air struck&nbsp;the dragon on the head with it, but the dragon, in its sleep, just brushed the spot on its head where he had been hit and said to the girl: "Something has bitten me just here." When he said this, the king's son struck him on the head once more and the dragon once again said to the girl :"Something's bitten me here again."&nbsp;

VUK STEFANOVIĆ KARADŽIČ The works of Vuk Karadžić (1787-1864), extensive and versatile, are essential when defining our national language and the literature written in our national language. As an author, he described national life, national customs and history of the Serbian people.

He was born in the village Tršić near Loznica. Collecting together national brainchilds, he demonstrated that true Serbian poetry is not that which had been created by learnned people for a limited circle of specialists, but the poetry that had appeared and lived among the people and he held that in future all literature should develop on these foundations.

Браћа његова, завидећи му што је он био јунак те је сестру нашао и избавио, пресеку опуту да он не би могао сићи, па онда нађу у пољу једно чобанче код оваца, и преобуку га имјесто брата свога оцу поведу, а сестри својој и девојкама оштро запрете да никоме не казују шта су они учинили.

As they lowered the girls, the brothers decided which one each of them would have and when they lowered the third girl, the one with the broody hen and chicks, the youngest brother reserved her for himself. His brothers, who were jealous of him as he had been the hero, having found and rescued their sister, cut the strap so that he could not get down.

Kад прође те собе, онда га сестра одведе у једну собу у којој је девојка једна седила за златним ђерђефом и златном жицом везла. Из те собе одведе га у другу у којој је друга девојка златне жице испредала. А најпосле уведе га у једну собу у којој је трећа девојка бисер низала, и пред њом на златној тепсији од злата квочка с пилићима бисер кљуцала.

When they had passed through these rooms, the dughter took him to a room where there was a girl sitting with a golden loom, weaving with a golden thread. From this room she took him into another where another girl was spinning with a golden thread. And finnaly she took him to a room where a third girl was stringing pearls, and in front of her a broody hen with her chicks was sorting through the pearls in a golden pan.

Попевши се горе, стане ићи из једне собе у другу, и тако наиђе на једну собу у којој види своју сестру гђе седи а змај јој метнуо главу на крило па спава а она га биште.

Млађа два брата рекну најстаријему да он свога коња закоље, али он не хтеде, па ни средњи не хтедне, онда најмлађи закоље свога, од коже његове окроји опуту, један крај од ње веже за стрелу, пак је пусти из лука у чардак. 

The youngest two brothers suggested that the eldest one should slaughter his horse, but he did not agree to this and neither did the middle brother, so the youngest slaughtered his horse, made a strap from its hide, fixed one end to an arrow and fired it from a bow at the chardak.

После некога времена дозна најмлађи брат на чардаку да се браћа, његова и оно чобанче оним девојкама жене.

In the field they found a shepherd's boy with some sheep and they dressed him in their brother's clothes and took him back to their father, with strict instructions to their sister and the other girls not to tell anyone what they had done.&nbsp;After a while, the youngest brother in the chardak learnt that that his brothers and the shepherd's boy were going to marry the girls.

Отац им допусти да иду да је траже, и да им свакоме по коња и остало што треба за пут, и тако они отиду. 

The brothers ran as fast as they could to their father and told him what had happened, saying that they wanted to go look for their sister. Their father consented to this and gave them each a horse and everything else they needed for the journey, and they set off.&nbsp;
