This year we have incorporated Science and History to our English curriculm in Primary School and it has been a BLAST! Dear sir / madam, I am writing this letter to complain about my stay at your hotel last weekend. I was totally disatisfied with both the service and the quality of the room. I was recommended your hotel by a friend of mine who had seen the advertisement on the internet. You can imagine my disappointment when I realized that some information was not true. Our room was at the back of the building, so we didn't have those "beautiful ocean views" as it was stated online. That was not what I had expected. Another piece of information that was not real was that the hotel was suitable for children. In fact, there was a dog in the front which terrified my kids. To make matters worse, when I was about to leave I went to the reception desk to pay for my stay and they charged us an extra summer supplement that had not been mentioned before. Thanks for celebrating our learning process!

In this lesson teacher Blanca Rodríguez encouraged her III Liceo students to express their viewpoints on controversial issues associated with the Literature topics dealt in class. These opinion essays are a formal piece of writing  which presents the author’s take on a particular subject supported by reasoning and examples. The opposing viewpoint may also be suggested, but it has to be followed by arguments that show its inconsistency. Making paralells on current, daily-life topics with Literature works enables students to develop a better understanding and often sympathize with the characters despite the time and cultural barriers among them.

"We all know that, these days, the most common thing to hear from the news is the huge increase in robberies. When you go out to the street, you may face the possibility that you could be mugged and robbed as it may also happen to the guy on the other street. But, what if I told you there is a way to avoid this? I have been thinking about the whole robbery thing. Let's imagine a situation in particular where you are walking down a very deserted road as the sun sets down. You see a guy walking towards you covered in a hoodie and sunglasses. What is the first thing that it might occur to you? This is a bad dude with non-friendly intentions, so you run away from him.

Gray boxes indicate that the letter is not in the word. A yellow box indicates the letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot. Green indicates that the letter is in the right spot. Students use these color clues to come up with their next guess, Advanced level teachers often use the official daily Wordle as a bellringer for the day. They report that it only takes a few minutes and is fun to all be working on the Wordle at the same time to see who can figure it out the quickest. No doubt this game not only sounds like such a classroom community builder, but also a great vocabulary enhancer.

Every year, from March to December, Primary students visit the English Department Office in order to play some games and to have a nice chat with the Coordinator of the English Department. During these instances students have the oppotunity to engage in a real conversation about themselves and their own interests, while they display their oracy skills.

"All good students and teachers share the same common enemy: disruptive and rude students who do not contribute to the learning environment. These are a terrible influence to the academic community and the rest of the society. Those who do not care about their own education are more likely to engage with violence and take part in objectionable activities. They themselves are worthless and all they do is just overcrowd the school and ruin its reputation. After, what will they become of them in the future? I personally suggest getting rid of these high school students with such low grades and an awful attitude. If they would rather not being in school, then why not forcing them to do physical labor? Additionally, they have no intention to carry on with their studies in college or get a decent job, so what do we have to lose? They are destined to having a mediocre lifestyle, possibly into drug dealing, and violence. It is better to take them out from school firsthand and give them something better to do, which ultimately will benefit the society. Plus, this will motivate students to set higher academic expectations and prevent them from behaving rudely. Furthermore, I believe that a great idea would be adding blinkers as a warning for those ones who refuse to pay attention. As you may know, a blinker is a device that prevents horses from seeing sideways and keeps them focused on what is in front by avoiding any kind of distractions. Students would have to think twice if they do not wish to wear them and this might be a prior warning to what could happen to them as I mentioned before.

                           ENGLISH PRESENTATIONS IN III MEDIA

Presentations are a great way to have students practice all language areas (vocabulary, grammar, discourse and phonology) and skills (speaking, reading, writing and listening). Having the confidence to speak in front of others is challenging for most people. For our English learners, this anxiety can be heightened because they are also speaking in a foreign language. We teachers at SIM have found several benefits to incorporating opportunities for students to present to their peers in a positive and safe classroom environment. It helps them focus on pronunciation and clarity and also boosts their confidence. This type of practice is also extremely useful since students will have to make a presentation for their Licenza Media exam at the end of this year.

Every week, with our History teachers, we engage in new adventures discovering the mysteries of the past. Come and join us!

Students From F2 to Form 6 have presented their PBSA (Project Based Speaking Assessment) to External International House teachers. This is an amazing experience were children exhibit and have a real conversation. This exhibition is based on a studied topic they chose to present for being of their own interest. Through PBSA we encourage self reflection, collaboration, autonomy, communication, citizenship and critical thinking among others while we celebrate our learning process.

My point is that we usually prejudge the potential robber and not only that, we would like to lock them in jail as long as possible. How unfair is that? We do not care about the robber's life, or how he ended up taking what he needs from the others. I personally believe that they are not necessarily doing anything wrong. We do not know what this person has been going through. he was desperate to get some cash out of stolen jewelry and the only way to get it is by acting illegally. So, if you look closely, we might be wrong by not letting them get what they actually need. Here is what I say: instead of their being locked up inside a cage for their justifiable deeds, we, or rather the ones who prevent them from doing what they want should be in there. It is logical that no one has ever thought of this. How selfish of us is using such power to keep them at bay. In my opinion, if we were the imprisoned ones, we would have some time to reflect on the matter. Basically, this would become a better world filled with empathy." - Matilde Carvalho.

After studying about Cave Art we went to the Boschetto with our History teacher Sole where we experimented about different ways of expressing, with different materials on different surfaces. We painted with our fingers and with sticks on stones, wood or even cardboard we found around. It was a great experience!!!
