Have you ever wondered why World War 2 started, or finished? The war lasted from September 1939 and ended in August 1945. There were some dreadful new inventions (the invention of the atomic bomb), also some new countries created (Israel, East Germany and Yugoslavia amongst others).
World War 2 was very very bad and was one of the worst in history. In World War 2, 70-85 million people were killed during those 6 years (that is around 3% of the whole world population at this time).
The trip to war
On the 1st of September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Britain had promised to protect them. Britain declared war on Germany on the 3rd of September, 1939. Adolf Hitler started World War 2 in revenge for World War 1. This devastating event lasted for just over 6 years and some survivors maybe alive still today.
Winston Churchill, was one of the greatest 20th century leaders in British history. His job (as Prime Minister) helped the whole country stay strong and try to defeat Hitler and his troops. He was great at leading the uk during wartime, but during peace time he was not really that great. He is famous for his speeches on radio. He helped in the Allied powers with the U.S and the Soviet Union. Winston Churchill had a special saying-it was, "Never never give up." He said that because in the war it was a saying for the solider when they were fighting in the war. Winston didn't get on well with the Russian Premier, Josef Stalin, but he knew that the Allies needed to unite with the Russians to help defeat Germany.
War time leaders
There were two sides in World War 2-the Allied forces and the Axis powers. The Allied forces were: Britain, France the U.S, Russia and China and the Axis powers were: Germany, Japan and Italy. Eire (Republic of Ireland),Portugal, Afghanistan, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain remained neutral in the war. America only joined because Japan attacked Pearl Harbour (and that's where their navy boats were stored). Did you know that Denmark was officially neutral, but was occupied by Germany throughout the war?
Which countries were involved?

Adolf Hitler was the leader of Germany in World War 2. Hitler started World War 2 by invading Poland. Hitler was a soldier during World War 1. He was a very famous public speaker and with his confident speeches, he was able to capture a mood for revenge in Germany. If people disagreed with him, he would either torture them, imprison them, or kill them.
Joseph Stalin was the leader of Soviet Union after the founder of Soviet Union in Russia, Vladimir Lenin, died in 1924. Stalin was the leader until he died in 1953. He was the cause of over 20 million deaths of his own soldiers. He was not a fan of Hitler: one of Germany's biggest mistakes was invading the Soviet Union.
Franklin D Roosevelt (the president of the U.S), was against the Axis powers and on the side of the Allied Powers during WW2. When the war spread all around Europe, Franklin wanted to stay out of WW2. But on 7th December, 1941, Japan bombed the U.S Naval base at Pearl Harbour. He had no choice but to join WW2.
There is no doubt that World War 2 was one of the most devastating events ever. Hundreds upon thousands of civilians were killed. If the soldiers didn't go to battle, the world would not be the same today.
Emperor Hirohito was the leader of Japan. Japan joined up with Nazi Germany and with Italy in 1940. Japan is the country which made the U.S join WW2, by bombing Pearl Harbour. (This made it possible for Japan to take over the Philippines and the South Pacific).
The war was a success in Japan at the time. But in 1942, it all turned against them. Japan were so determined to not surrender. However, that changed when the U.S dropped an atonic bomb on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Masses of Japanese were killed, and that caused WW2 to end.
There is no doubt that World War 2 was one of the most devastating events ever. Hundreds upon thousands of civilians were killed. If the soldiers didn't go to battle, the world would not be the same today.
