World War Two ( as the name implies) was the Second World War of the twentieth century. Starting on the 3rd of September, 1939, the six perilous years it went on for, were the most destructive of their kind. This was strengthened by the creation of the Atomic bomb, that although killed only a small percentage of the 70-85 million during the war (146,000 were killed by the bomb) was still devastating. Finally it ended on the 8th of May,1945 (to the great relief of the world).
How did it start?
In 1933 Adolf Hitler was elected as the chancellor of Germany, which enabled him to do what he wanted. For almost six years from 1939, to 1945, Britain fought the toughest fight it ever experienced. Germany invaded Poland on the 1st of September, 1939.

Dominant wartime leaders
During world war 2, it was vital that the countries had a strong leader, or else the country would be invaded and people killed.

Josef Stalin became leader of Soviet Union (he was not democratically voted in) and Josef Stalin hated Adolf Hitler, therefore making an alliance with Winston Churchill to fight in the war against Hitler.

Winston Churchill was one of the leaders in World War 2 who was in charge of the soldiers of Britain. He helped the United Kingdom to stand strong and, "Never ,never give up." Adolf Hitler sent Germany to invade Britain and France and Winston Churchill helped his soldiers fight against the Germans.
President Franklin D Roosevelt is most known for leading the United States and was in the Allied powers against the Axis forces. America remained neutral during the war until Japan bombed Pearl Harbour, leaving hundreds dead : this is the reason Roosevelt declared war.
The chancellor of Germany ( and the leader of the Nazi party ) was Adolf Hitler. He was a German soldier in World War One, and proved to be a very competent speech maker. This was useful when trying to convince Germany to agree with his view point. Once he had the whole of Germany under his authority, it was easy for him to invade Poland.
Emperor Hirohito ( ruler of Japan) joined forces with Germany and Italy in 1940 ( which meant that Japan was then a member of the Axis powers). In order to allow Japan to enlarge its territories in the Pacific Ocean, Hirohito decided to drop a bomb on the American naval base at Pearl Harbour. This let Japan take over much of the South Pacific ( including the Philippines ).
