World War II-just how much do you know about it? Changing the face of history, this war saw horrendous acts of brutality(the holocaust), dreadful new technology (the invention of the atomic bomb) and the creation of new countries (East Germany, Israel and Yugoslavia amongst others). On August 6th and 9th, 1945, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were demolished by the first atomic bombs used in warfare.

On the 1st of September, 1939, Adolf Hitler marched his soldiers into Poland and invaded them. Britain promised to protect Poland, so they declared war! In 1933, the German people voted Hitler to be all powerful, which meant he could do as he wished.

Wartime leaders

Wartime leaders are very important, otherwise their country would be invaded very quickly.

Winston Churchill was one of the greatest wartime leaders. He was a strong leader and said some famous quotes like, "Never, never ever give up!"

Adolf Hitler hated the Jewish and sent lots of Jews to concentration camps and many of them sadly died (over 6,000,000!) He wanted more land and sent Germany into Poland. This was the main cause for World War II.

Josef Stalin became leader of the Soviet Union after the founder of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin, died in 1924. Josef Stalin wasn't voted in democratically.
President Franklin D Roosevelt is most known for leading the United States and assisting the Allied powers with defeating the Axis powers. They weren't in the war until December 7th, 1941 when Japan bombed the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbour.
World War II was a very brutal time and carried on for 6 years. Sadly, 70-85 million people died and 6 million Jewish people were killed in the Holocaust by Hitler. 15,000,000 of these casualties were soldiers! (70-85 million people was 3% of the world's population at the time!) If the forces didn't win, life as we know it would be in a terrible state, because the Germans would have us as slaves! Furthermore, there were 61 countries in World War II, but had Germany won there would only be one big country... Germany!
Emperor Hirohito was the Japanese leader and was in the Axis powers and dropped the bomb on Pearl Harbour.
