World War 2, was it really what you thought? Weapons and technology, guns and bombs, were all advancing throughout the war, killing more and more people. Sadly, over seventy five million people lost their lives and hundreds upon thousands of people got injured. Surprisingly, that was 3% of the world population at the time!
The road to hell
Many years ago, Adolf Hitler was in World War 1, until he became leader of the Nazi party in Germany. Hitler wanted to become even more powerful. In 1933, he was elected Chancellor of Germany, which allowed him to get whatever he wanted. He began expanding the German territory. His Nazi party wanted to start by invading neighbouring countries. On the 1st September, 1939, Germany invaded Poland, which was the first of many great mistakes. England promised to protect Poland, so they warned Germany that if their troups weren't called off by the 3rd September, they would be at war with Great Britain.

Throughout the world, most of the major countries got sucked into the war. They were divided into two sides: the Allied forces and the Axis powers. (Depending of whether they supported Germany or not). Some countries named themselves 'neutral' (which meant they weren't involved).

Who lead the countries?
In any wartime, you need a big, strong ruler that can dominate, because if you don't, your country will be taken over.
Winston Churchill was an amazing and unbelievable leader of the 20th century. His brilliant leadership (as prime minister) helped many of countries and cities to be brave against the horrible Hitler and Nazi party.
Joseph Stalin become leader of the Soviet Union after the founder of Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin, died in 1924. Remarkably,Stalin was the leader until his own death in 1953. Shockingly, he was responsible for the deaths of 20 million of his own people! He despised Hitler, so he made the Russian army fight fiercely.
The dictator of Germany and leader of the Nazi party, Adolf Hitler, was a soldier in WW1. Nobody could argue, he was a very convincing speech maker: thus everyone believed him. But if you didn't, he would torture and execute you (especially if you were Jewish).
Franklin D Roosevelt is most famous for being president of the United States. He also assisted the Allied forces against the Axis after Japan bombed Pearl Harbour. He was elected more than once to lead America.

Emperor Hirohito ruled Japan. In 1940, he joined the Axis powers along with Germany and Italy. In order to rule the South Pacific, Japan bombed the USA (making a new enemy).
At first, the war was going great for Japan, but in 1942, it started to go down hill. Even though across the world the war had ended, Japan refused to give up. But eventually, in August 1945, USA dropped the first nuclear bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima- killing hundreds of thousands of people.
There's no doubt that World War 2 was the worst war ever. Britain did not fight alone : the war also involved 61 countries with 17 billion people (three quarters of the world population.) If they had not lost their lives fighting the enemy, our lives would not be the same today. It would be so horrible and dreadful .
