Human-Environment Interaction
Human-environment interaction is how humans and the environment interact. There are three ways that we can classify these interactions, the first one being how we adapt to it. An example of this would be us making a fire to adapt to the heat. Then There’s how we modify it. An example of this is building tunnels for a train through mountains. The final thing is that we depend on it. An example of this is us depending on it to grow food.
Place
Place can be defined in two ways, as physical characteristics or cultural characteristics. Physical refers to the natural features like the landforms, Flora and Fauna, climate, and resources. Cultural is the way people live somewhere. This includes every day life, land use, and political ideologies.
Regions
There are three types of regions. Formal, these are regions defined by the government like cities. Functional, regions that are defined by their function. And vernacular, this is a weird one because it’s a region that is made up. It is based off the people’s perception.
Movement
Location
Movement is how things get from place to place. There are three different types of movement, the first one being human movement. This would be by something like train or car. Then there’s movement of products. This could be moved by something like train or boat. Finally, there was the movement of ideas. This could be by something like trains or sending letters.
Location is about where we are, with two different types of location. The first type is absolute. This is given in degrees of latitude and longitude or as things like street signs. Then there is relative. This is described by landmarks, time, direction, and distance.
The Geography of the West has shaped us by allowing us to have a thriving economy with multiple industries that have helped us settle and develop.
Because of our economic vastness, we will always have things to fall back on if one of these industries were to fail, while many other places don’t have that luxury. These industries that the west relies on are things like lumber, mining, fishing, oil, agriculture, and tourism. A good example of the West being able to fall back on its many economic factors is what happened when Covid hit. A lot of these industries were shut down and many places took massive hits to their economies due to this while the west still had a economy that was working. We were definitely still impacted, but we were able to keep going fairly strong.
