A Review of 2020 headlines from Italian Media

In May and June Italy has been involved in a period of quarantine divided into two phases. During the so-called "phase one", which had started in March, we weren't allowed to see other people apart from our family members who lived in the same house as us and everyone had to stay home: only one family member could go out, just to do some shopping or for a specific reason.

The second phase started on May 4th and was a little different from the first one. Everyone was able to see a few other relatives; on June 18th restrictions were less strict and we almost got back to normal life: restaurants and bars opened again and we started to go out and see a few friends, always wearing a mask on and keeping distance. Some people got back to work and we also started to move again from a place to another without self certification.

"I can't breathe", the sentence pronounced by George Floyd appeared on the boulders of the Foro Italico in Palermo.&nbsp;

The George Floyd, 46, &nbsp;died after being arrested by police outside a shop in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was handcuffed and pinned to the ground by an officer's knee. Mr Floyd said more than 20 times he could not breathe as he was restrained by the officers. The episode was captured on a shocking video.

After the first days of October the number of infected people has rapidly increased, recording a remarkable worsening. For this reason a new emergency decree signed by the Prime Minister on the 18th October marked the return to online lessons. Lessons can last from 45 to 50 minutes each and must include adequate breaks between one hour and another. This new form of teaching has both advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages are certainly saving time, flexibility of the teachers and the possibility of spending more time with your family. The worst disadvantage instead is the lack of human contact with classmates and teachers. Moreover some technical problems can frequently occur.

In December 2020, several earthquakes were reported Sicily, in the area surrounding Ragusa (Sicily) municipality

It was around 9.27 PM. The magnitude was 4.4, the earthquake was also felt in many provinces of the island such as Syracuse, Palermo and Catania. People got really scared.

The phase 3 officially starts with the dpcm (emergency decree) of the 11th June, becomes effective on the 15 and provides more openings compared to previous weeks. Playground areas, gyms, discos, cinemas and theatres, outdoor shows restart, but with a maximum of 200 and 1000 spectators allowed. The obligation to wear a mask outdoor is cancelled, even if in some regions (Lombardy) this restriction will continue.

On the 15th, an App was introduced that allows to track the movements of possible infected people, following an experimentation in some Italian regions. Despite the propaganda, many people are told not to download it. Finally, on the 23rd, Italy records the first day with the lowest number of positives since the start of the pandemic, with a total of 113 infected, a number that unfortunately will slowly rise again

Italian Prime Minister Conte signs the Dpcm (an emergency decree) on the 9th March 2020 that imposes restrictions to the movement of people, closes schools until April 3rd, blocks all sport events, bans both outdoors and indoors gatherings.

His speech during press conference were: " we are aware of how difficult it is to change our habits. But unfurtnately there is no time to waste. I am forced to intervene decisively to protect the health of all citizens, in particular the most fragile"

On 26th April, the Prime Minister announced the kick off of "Phase 2" would start on the 4th of May. Movements across regions were still forbidden, while the ones between municipalities were allowed only for work and health reasons as well as to visit relatives. He also allowed the re-opening of closed factories, but schools, bars, restaurants and barbers were still kept closed.

Despite some precautions, day by day the infection increased again. For this reason the Italian government introduced new restrictions and new rules to be followed, such as wearing a mask or using hand sanitizers before entering a school or keeping social distancing to reduce the risk of infection among students and teachers.

In Lecco (near Milan), two elderly people who could not count on the proximity of their relatives, decided to call the state police asking if any supermarket nearby could deliver home. The policeman who received the call decided to help those people in need.

August 2020 has been the month of the year with more arrivals on the Italian coasts, over 700 in a single month. This has created great problems for politicians to find an adequate solution.&nbsp;There has also been a lot of concern of positive cases of Covid 19 among migrants.

At the end of August 2020, data on Covid-19 cases from that month have been released. After the reopening of the clubs there has been a significant increase of 37.9% of new cases. During this month, with previous research done for covid -19 vaccines, some early tests have been performed on volunteers.

On the 2nd of November 2020 Luigi Proietti (called Gigi) a very appreciated and talented Italian actor, comedian, playwright, movie director, singer suddenly died.

He was an artist of great value and experience. He had been acting since the early '70s. He died on his 80th birthday form a cardiac arrest.

A young boy, Willy Monteiro Duarte, was brutally killed after coming to the rescue of a friend who was being beaten up by four people, including a pair of brothers with police records.
