The Homicide

In 1999 Hae Min Lee was a senior at Woodlawn high school in Baltimore when she went missing on January 13th. About a month later on February 9th Hae Min Lee’s body was found in Leakin Park. The cops and many people wanted to know who killed Hae Min Lee so I believe when Adnan Syed a suspect of the murder was interviewed he was wrongly accused and convicted to provide closure to the family and the public.

A Good Kid
The first reason I believe that Adnan Syed is innocent is, according to his classmates he was a good student and a good person who was active in his community. In the ‘Serial’ podcast narrated by Sarah Koenig, she interviews a girl named Rabia who was a classmate of Adnan at the time. In the interview, Rabia states “He was an Honor roll student, volunteer EMT. He was on the football team. He was a star runner on the track team. He was the homecoming king. He led prayers at the mosque. Everybody knew Adnan to be somebody who was going to do something really big.”- Serial Episode 1: The Alibi. Using this quote we can infer that Rabia thought Adnan was a good person and was not the killer. This would also help explain when a girl named Asia McClain said she saw Adnan at the library at the time detectives said the killing happened.
Since Adnan was a good student, it would make sense that he was reading or doing work in the library. “There’s a girl I go to school with who her name is Asia McClain, he’s like right after I got arrested she wrote me a couple of letters and she said she also went to see my family and she said she specifically remembers me being at the public library right after school. The Woodman Public Library is just across the parking lot from Woodland Highschool.”- Serial Episode 1: The Alibi. This proves that he is innocent because if he was at the library when Asia Mclain said she saw him then Adnan is innocent because he can’t be in two places at once.
Leakin Park
The second reason I believe Adnan is innocent is, he said he had never been to or heard of Leakin Park, the park where Hae Min Lee’s body was found. In Episode 3 of the Serial podcast, the narrator Sarah Koenig interviews Adnan who is in jail via a phone call. In the interview, he says “I was like Leakin Park, I’m like where is that do you even know where it is, have you ever been there? And he’s like I have never been there, I don’t even know where it is.” - Episode 3: Leakin Park. This proves that Adnan is innocent because he doesn’t know where the location is that the body was supposedly dumped, how could he dump it there?
Another quote from the episode states “A lot of law-abiding Baltimoreans they don’t even really know where Leakin Park is.” - Episode 3: Leakin Park. Using this quote we know that there is a good chance he is telling the truth because many people in Baltimore don’t know where Leakin Park is.
The Man Who Turned His Back on Adnan
One last reason I believe Adnan is innocent is, Jay had changed his testimony in court and it was different than what he told cops in the interview, Jen who was Jay’s friend also lied to cops. In Episode 4 we are told “So Jen goes downtown to see the cops later that night and she lies to them.” - Episode 4: Inconsistencies. Why would you lie to the cops unless you were guilty? Additionally, wouldn’t you want to help the cops find a killer so there is not a murderer walking free on the streets?
