Ka Moolelo o Meheau

When the flowers are yellow and in bloom, then Meheanu is in the fishpond, ensuring that the pono (balance) of the pond is preserved. It is said it is the color of her urine.

From a scientific standpoint, the story of Meheanu is used to help i'a feed and fatten. 

Meheanu’s presence in the fishpond is indicated by the flowers of the hau plant that grows nearby. If the flowers are green and budding, then Meheanu is mauka, in an area called Luamoʻo.

The kiaʻi (guardian) of Paepae o Heʻeia is Meheanu, who can take the form of a wahine, a luahine, a kupuna, and a puhi.

However, Meheanu most commonly appears as a moʻo; a dragon, shapeshifter, and protector of the area.

When the hau turns red, you are able to fish again.
