Agriculture is a big deal for Virginia. It mainly starts with crops and livestock. Agriculture is Virginia's largest private industry. Why is agriculture important though? Well, it's kind of a cycle. Growing crops like corn, oats, and barley feed different types of livestock. There is an estimated amount of 675,000 cows in Virginia. Isn't that a lot? Cows provide protein in beef. Have you figured out the cycle yet? It's from crops feeding livestock like cows to, livestock providing people humans food and protein. In Virginia there are livestocks like cattle, (which are cows) buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens. Chickens have a good cause in Virginia. They provide us eggs! Eggs are running low this year. A solution to this is that you can own a chicken and get your own eggs so you don't have to pay those outrageous prices. Sheep are also, a good example. They provide wool for clothes. Tobacco is Virginia's main crop. It was also known as a cash crop because people would barter it more than giving money that they didn't have. In Virginia 8.1 million acres is farmland. What kind of regions are there in Virginia?

All of Virginia is made up of 5 regions. Appalachian Platue, Valley and Ridge, Piedmont, Blue Ridge Mountain, and the Coastal Plain/Tidewater. These are in order from where they are placed. What's interesting about these regions? There is coal in the Appalachian Platue. Coal is very important to Virginia. The Valley and Ridge is made up of mountains. Mountains have trees and plants on them so the Valley and Ridge has a lot of wildlife. Convergent plates overtime have formed the mountains in the Valley and Ridge. The Piedmont has rolling hills. There is a lot of farmland in the Piedmont. The Piedmont is the ''foot of the mountains.'' The Blue Ridge Mountains are called that because the mountains look more blue than green. This region also had Convergent plates form its mountains. The Chesapeake Bay is placed along the Coastal Plain. The Coastal Plain is the closest region to the ocean. Would you rather stay at the Piedmont or the Coastal Plain?

There are seven major ocean currents. The one that impacts Virginia is the Gulf Stream. Ocean currents are caused, in large part, by wind patterns and the difference between water temperatures. These differences ''stir'' the ocean waters. Picture the Gulf Stream as a warm ''river''in the cooler Atlantic Ocean. It is a large current system that starts off Mexico's coast. When it reaches North Carolina, it drifts into the North Atlantic, carrying huge amounts of warm water across the Atlantic. This keeps many parts of Western Europe much warmer than countries at the same latitude in North Carolina or Asia.

There is so much to do outdoors in Virginia! We have lots of forests and resources here. We have a bunch of limestone rock in Virginia. Water is Virginia's main resource. Our soils are fertilized and well-drained which means that they are great for new plants to grow. This is also great to feed livestocks. Hiking is also very popular here. Why are there so many rivers and forests in Virginia? Well, the forests maily maintain animals in them. Unlike rainforests, they get lots of rain and they have some awkward animals in there.
