“It’s hard to beat a person that never gives up”, Babe Ruth.
What have you realized about your own grit and effort?
I have realized that over time perseverance can amount to a lot of positive outcomes.
For example, last year I didn’t quite make select soccer. That was my 4th straight year not making it, so at first I was quite upset. In addition, the team I had been on for 3 years, broke up, which discouraged me. However, with the limited games we had this season I felt like I dominated and had my best year. And when I get my chance I’m going to take full advantage of it.
Where do you show these skills best?
For example, when I started grade 8 choir, I was pretty nervous about it all. I soon got to know people and found it really fun. However, I have since joined the Senior Chamber choir which required a lot of perseverance since the choir was mostly grade 12’s. In addition, the songs were a lot more difficult and high-level than songs I was used to. After several rehearsals, I have gotten to know some people and got a lot more comfortable.

How could you use those skills more?
I think I can use my skills to try new things and go out of my comfort zone. Also, to overcome challenges and obstacles in learning and in life.
We have recently been looking a the difference between a Fixed Mindset and a Growth Mindset. I think that currently for most things, my mindset is in the middle. For example, it depends what kind of things happen.
How have your thoughts on intelligence changed as a result of new understanding?
My thoughts on intelligence have changed so that I now know that intelligence is not something you gain from staying in your comfort zone, its something you gain from trying new things and trying your hardest.
Can you think of a time you received fixed mindset praise? Or a time you received Growth mindset praise? Did you notice a difference in your success?
How have your thoughts on achievement in school changed as a result of new understanding?
I received Fixed mindset praise many times in Elementary due to tests, and different projects. For example, I would get a good grade on something and I thought that’s all there was to learn. I received Growth mindset praise by getting honest feedback on what I needed to improve. I noticed that I learned more from my failure when receiving growth mindset praise.
I have noticed from new understanding that school is more about “a first attempt at learning”, (meaning failure is the first step), than always staying in your “bubble of fixed mindset.
