Traditional houses and way of life in Slavonia

In the north and east of Croatia, the walls of houses are made of dirt. with hay, homemade unbaked brick or real baked brick. The houses are single-storey, mostly with a gabled thatched or reed roof, later with tiled roofs, with a porch along the courtyard façade. They were mostly narrow and facing the street. In Slavonia and Baranja, long, one-story buildings are common, where the main residential house is followed by living quarters for close relatives, with separate entrances from the porch, as well as other utility rooms: storage rooms, stables, brick ovens etc.

It was probably built in the 14th&nbsp;century when it was mentioned as the parish Church of St. Lawrence. During the time of the Ottoman reign it was converted into a mosque (the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque), which has been preserved and converted into the Catholic Church of All Saints. The beauty of this unique building lies in its interior built in the Byzantine-Moorish style. It is located at Dr. Franjo Tuđman Square.

St. Martin's Church in Strizivojna is a characteristic sacral building in the central part of Slavonia. As was customary during the 19th century, a new masonry building was built in 1835-1836 on the site of the former modest and rustic wooden church, dedicated on January 21, 1836.

Kindergarten Bajka Strizivojna takes care of the youngest residents of the municipality of Strizivojna and its surroundings. They organize and implement programs of care, education, health care and nutrition for children from one year of age to school age. The director of the kindergarten is Ivana Šimić.

This three-nave cathedral is 74 m long. The Cathedral is crowned by a dome of 59 m and two bell towers of 84 m. Frescoes by Alexander-Maximilian Seitz and his son Ludwig Seitz impart a special aura of harmony to the Cathedral’s interior. The Cathedral is adorned by 7 altars and numerous sculptures.&nbsp;The main altar is dedicated to the Cathedral’s Patron Saint, St. Peter. One of the most valuable item is the organ at the choir with a big rose window in the background.&nbsp;

In 1965, Cathedral was granted the honorary title&nbsp;basilica minor&nbsp;(minor basilica) by Blessed Pope Paul VI. In 1927, it was visited by Msgr Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, future Pope Saint John XXIII, and on 7 June 2003, by Saint Pope John Paul II. In 2008, it was elevated to the rank of “Metropolitan” or “Cathedral Church”.&nbsp;The original design of the Cathedral was preserved, even though it was subject to destruction many times.

The first information about the school in Strizivojna dates from 1 December 1829. The school was organized and started operating in 1830. The first school building with a classroom and a teacher's apartment was erected in Strizivojna in 1858. (It was located on the site of today's elementary school, about half a mile west of the church and the officer's apartment). As parents were reluctant to send their children to school, either because of poverty or because of the need for children to participate in agricultural work, the school generally met the needs. Today, the school in Strizivojna is a modern school, equipped with modern technology and specialized classrooms. The school is attended by students from 1st to 8th grade. Within the school there is a modern sports hall. In addition to the elementary school "Ivana Brlić Mažuranić" Strizivojna, there is also a province school Soljak. Elementary school "Ivana Brliž Mažuranić" has been in numerous eTwinning projects and Erasmus + projects for ten years.

In 2002 the Berda sculpture was erected for Šime Vidulin, depicting the berda musical instrument, made out of white stone and located at the entrance of the Strossmayer Park.

The monument of Bishop J.J. Strossmayer was made by sculptor Marijan Sušec, according to the model of Robert Valdec. It was installed in 1999 across the Cathedral of St Peter.

At the beginning of the Đakovo promenade (from Strossmayer Square), since spring 2013, sits a bronze statue of Luka Botić, the work of an academic sculptor Marijan Sušac. This statue is a gift from Benašić couple to residents of Đakovo on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the death of the famous writer.

The municipality of Strizivojna is one of 35 municipalities in the Osijek-Baranja County. It is located in the southeastern part of the county and covers an area of 36.26 km², which is 0.9% of the county area. The municipality consists of settlements Strizivojna and Merolino Sikirevačko. The administrative seat of the municipality is located in Strizivojna. Strizivojna has the longest street in the Republic of Croatia; it is called Braće Radića Street and it is 7.8 kilometers long. The mayor is Josip Jakobović.

Monumental St Peter’s Cathedral in Đakovo remains a sort of “beacon of faith” on the skyline of the City of Đakovo and the whole of Slavonia.&nbsp; The most important cultural monument in Đakovo and the most beautiful cathedral between Venice and Istanbul, as Pope XXIII described it, is located at Strossmayer Square.&nbsp;&nbsp; Today’s cathedral, which replaced the first cathedral from the 14th&nbsp;century and the second Baroque cathedral from the 18th&nbsp;century, was commissioned by Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer “To the Glory of God, Unity of the Churches, Integrity of the Nation and out of Love for My People”. The cathedral was built in a successful blending of Romanesque and Gothic styles to the design made by Viennese architects Carl Roesner and Friedrich Schmidt. After sixteen years, which is how long it took for construction to be completed (1866-1882), the Cathedral was solemnly consecrated on 1 October 1882.

The narrow, long courtyard was dominated by a water well called "đeram". The upper part of the well was usually made of locally grown oak trees. The mills were run by cattle, so they were larger buildings with a circular floor plan and a conical roof.

The courtyards are fenced towards the street with a wooden fence (taraba) with small gates for pedestrians and large ones for cars. Outside the settlement there are special farms with residential buildings and housing for livestock.
