By: MarieDear mère and père,
I am now in a line to go to you and America It is taking forever. Many people must want to go to America. I miss you so. One person is now taking me on to a very big boat. I am frightened. They are bringing me down to a place called steerage. I thought we would get some nice beds, blankets, pillows, and nice fresh food. Instead we got bunk beds, dirty rags for blankets, no pillows, and rotten meat and other very disgusting foods. If we can make friends with a person who is in first class then you are one of the luckiest people on the boat. They get the food that I wanted. Sometimes they drop their leftovers and we scramble to one spot. Even though I miss you so, oncle Louis and tante Elise’s house was much better. I should probably stop writing and try to make some friends.
Love,
Marie

Dear mère and père,
The storm has finally passed. Some people got seasick. I see a green statue. Almost all the people were cheering and crying tears of joy. I wondered what it was so I asked somebody. They said we have arrived to America and it was the Statue of Liberty. I told Lucie and some other people if they asked. I told her that we would see you in a few minutes. She said that we would have to go to a place called Ellis Island. She said that that was the place where we could be sent back to Belgium. Then I started to wonder what would make us go back to home. Was it because were to young or because we weren’t nice or something? I just hope that I’m not too young or I’m not mean to them if that is the reason that we get sent back. I might drop your letter into the water because I’m on the deck looking at the Statue of Liberty.
Love,
Marie

Dear mère and père,
The ship has just docked. Some people are coming on to the boat. Who are they? What do they want? I am getting off of the boat. The random people are looking at me and they let me go. I look at the big place. They gave me a tag. What is this? I understand them a little because they are speaking english. I have no bags so I just walk. There were stairs and I just walked up them. People were standing at the top of the stairs. They said go. So I kept on walking. Then there was this thing that was called a buttonhook. I didn’t know what it was though. When it was finally my turn they bring the buttonhook to my eye. I started to scream. Were they going to poke my eye out? They just lifted my eyelid up. It was still kind of scary but it isn’t as scary as poking your eyeball out. Then there was a big room. Some people were looking at us again. They put chalk marks on the person in front of me and they said go this way different than the others. When that happened the person looked extremely sad for a long time. I was checked and people said go so I went. I will continue writing this to you in a moment

Dear mère and père,
Right now I am waiting for someone to call my name. After a hour, my name is called. I am taken to a room with no windows. There is someone right next to me. The person asks me a question. I don’t understand. The person right next to me says where were you born? I reply Belgium. They say something to the man that said something in the first place. I realize that he is a translator. They ask me other questions. I think I passed the legal inspection. A lady outside when I was waiting told me what it was called. We got on a staircase and the people in the middle seemed very unhappy. I bet they were being sent back to their home country. At the bottom of the stairs there were many things. Lucie has passed everything too. I will continue my writing to you in a second.
