Cognitive Behavior Therapy Model
Main Idea:
One can change (modify) one thinking by using behavior therapy techniques. Thinking can be seen as a behavior, a pattern of thinking can be positively or negatively reinforced like a behavior pattern. Change a person’s thinking, in order to change how they feel and then how they act. Reorganize one’s own internal dialogue will result in a reorganization of one’s own behavior.

View of Human Nature: Humans operate from the cognitive / emotive realm, therefore all behavior begins in the thought pattern of the individual. The issue is that humans have disruptive thinking patterns that they believe to be true thus their behavior reflects this wrong-type of thinking and they live ineffective lives because of the way they think.

Unhealthy Types of Thinking
Twisted thinking: This is the most common type of negative thinking. It is taking something out of context and believing it to be true. Most of the time the thought will have something about I, me, or mine. It can include rationalizations (excuses), half-truths, distorted and incorrect perceptions.
Read the section about unhealthy thinking, what type of thinking do you identify with?
Absolute thinking: This type of thinking sees issues as black or white, concrete type of thinking, it is this way only, no gray, no alternatives, in essence, “I am right, your wrong andI am not going to listen to your side”.
Awfulize thinking: Thinking the worst thing that could happen is going to happen and there is nothing you can do about it. It will be awful if this happens. Also this type of thinking tends to blow up minor occurrences into major ordeals. It is when we feel wronged by someone and it is the worst thing in the world to happen.
