Mount Carmel Values

Our aim is for every child to leave here an Ambassador of Christ.
Our values are deeply rooted in the high expectations that we have of each child in the school. Our Values permeate across the school through children's learning, friendships, behaviour and leadership.
Our values come from the Church.

Our British Values

Our children learn about our British Values through 5 areas. These are discussed at whole school liturgies and during lunch times. We are committed to serving our community, with the strong belief that we are one school for all.

Our Power Values

Our aim is for every child to leave with the power to make a positive change in the world. Through our subjects there are five themes that we believe are integral with teaching children how to become powerful adults.

We ensure that these themes run through our subjects. Children learn about 5 areas of power - Education, Religion, Resources, People and Legacy.

Your child will know
• that families are important for children growing up because they
can give love, security and stability.
• the characteristics of healthy family life, commitment to each
other, including in times of difficulty, protection and care for
children and other family members, the importance of spending
time together and sharing each other’s lives.
• that others’ families, either in school or in the wider world,
sometimes look different from their family, but that they should
respect those differences and know that other children’s families
are also characterised by love and care.
• that stable, caring relationships, which may be of different types,
are at the heart of happy families, and are important for children’s
security as they grow up.
• that marriage represents a formal and legally recognised
commitment of two people to each other which is intended to be
lifelong.
• how to recognise if family relationships are making them feel
unhappy or unsafe, and how to seek help or advice from others if
needed.

Your child will know
• how important friendships are in making us feel happy and secure,
and how people choose and make friends.
• the characteristics of friendships, including mutual respect,
truthfulness, trustworthiness, loyalty, kindness, generosity, trust,
sharing interests and experiences and support with problems and
difficulties.
• that healthy friendships are positive and welcoming towards
others, and do not make others feel lonely or excluded.
• that most friendships have ups and downs, and that these can
often be worked through so that the friendship is repaired or even
strengthened, and that resorting to violence is never right.
• how to recognise who to trust and who not to trust, how to judge
when a friendship is making them feel unhappy or uncomfortable,
managing conflict, how to manage these situations and how to
seek help or advice from others, if needed.

personality or backgrounds), or make different choices or have
different preferences or beliefs.
• practical steps they can take in a range of different contexts to

• the importance of self-respect and how this links to their own
happiness.
• that in school and in wider society they can expect to be treated
with respect by others, and that in turn they should show due
respect to others, including those in positions of authority.
• about different types of bullying (including cyberbullying), the
impact of bullying, responsibilities of bystanders (primarily
reporting bullying to an adult) and how to get help.
• what a stereotype is, and how stereotypes can be unfair, negative
or destructive.
• the importance of permission-seeking and giving in relationships
with friends, peers and adults.

Your child will know
• that people sometimes behave differently online, including by
pretending to be someone they are not.
• that the same principles apply to online relationships as to face-to-face relationships, including the importance of respect for others
online including when we are anonymous.
• the rules and principles for keeping safe online, how to recognise
risks, harmful content and contact, and how to report them.
• how to critically consider their online friendships and sources of
information including awareness of the risks associated with
people they have never met.
• how information and data is shared and used online.

• what sorts of boundaries are appropriate in friendships with peers
and others (including in a digital context).
• about the concept of privacy and the implications of it for both
children and adults; including that it is not always right to keep
secrets if they relate to being safe.

between appropriate and inappropriate or unsafe physical, and
other, contact.
• how to respond safely and appropriately to adults they may
encounter (in all contexts, including online) whom they do not
know.
• how to recognise and report feelings of being unsafe or feeling
bad about any adult.
• how to ask for advice or help for themselves or others, and to
keep trying until they are heard.
• how to report concerns or abuse, and the vocabulary and

How RSE is taught in the Early Years Foundation Stage

EYFS

Children will learn that they are created and loved by God. Rooted in the teaching that we are created by God out of love and for love, children will develop an understanding of the importance of valuing themselves as the basis for personal relationships.

EYFS

Children explore the individual’s relationship with others. Building on the understanding that we have been created out of love and for love, children will explore how we take this calling into our family, friendships and relationships, and teaches strategies for developing healthy relationships and keeping safe.

Children will explore their relationship with the wider world. Here we explore how human beings are relational by nature and are called to love others in the wider community through service, through dialogue and through working for the Common Good

God Knows you and
Special People
Children to learn that saying sorry is important and can mend friendships;
Jesus cared for others and had expectations of them and how they should act; To identify ‘special people’ (their parents, carers, friends, parish priest) and what makes them special;
The importance of nuclear and wider family;

Feelings and Dislikes and Feelings inside.
Children will learn that it is natural for us to relate to and trust one another;
That we all have different ‘tastes’ (likes and dislikes), but also similar needs. Children will engage with discussion questions throughout the film.
Children can reflect on and articulate their own feelings about given scenarios and their own experiences.

Being safe, good secrets – bad secrets and physical contact
Children will answer questions to know what is and isn’t safe online;
Children will know who they can go to, to talk about anything they feel uncomfortable about, particularly online
They will know the difference between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ secrets and that they can be open with ‘special people’ they trust if anything troubles them;
How to resist pressure when feeling unsafe
To know that they are entitled to bodily privacy;

Three in one – who is my neighbour?
Children will learn that God is love: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, that being made in His image means being called to be loved and to love others To know what a community is, and that God calls us to live in community with one another;
They will learn about the importance of living in community. Jesus’ teaching on who is my neighbour.

Clean and Healthy - Our bodies are good and we need to look after them;
What constitutes a healthy lifestyle, including physical activity, dental health and healthy eating;
The importance of sleep, rest and recreation for our health;
How to maintain personal hygiene

Children will have to take up the mantle of the expert and help Super Susie through experiencing strong feelings for the first time. Children will reinforce previous learning by helping Susie through discussion. They will learn more about consequences of choices and what to do when it all goes wrong.
They will know that God created us to follow the cycle of life and He loves us at every stage. We are created to grow, change and learn, not least about the love of God and how we can share it with others. There can be joy in every stage of life!

Treat others well and say sorry.

Children will learn how their behaviour
affects other people, and that there is appropriate and inappropriate
behaviour;
The characteristics of positive and negative relationships;
Different types of teasing and that all bullying is wrong and unacceptable.

For children to revise the PANTS rule. This is framed in the core belief that our bodies are made by God and given to us as wonderful gifts that deserve our and others respect.
Pupils will relate their prior knowledge of medicines and the need to be safe around them to new learning about harmful substances. This is underpinned with the religious teaching that our bodies are a gift from God which we should take care of.
Children explore what makes a situation a 999 emergency and introduces children to the principles of basic First Aid through animated teaching, role play and discussions.

The Communities we live in –
Children will learn about the different communities that they are part of, local and global. They will think about what it means to belong to a community and the rights and responsibilities that come with it.
Children will also learn that how they act can help or harm their communities.

We don’t have to be the same and respecting our bodies.

About the need to respect and look after their bodies as a gift from God through what they wear, what they eat and what they physically do.
Children learn that similarities and differences can be celebrated and can benefit a community through working together. Pupils will also be given an opportunity to reflect on God’s love as the foundation of our self-confidence.

Children will learn to examine their feelings, to try to understand them and what causes them. They will be given some techniques to scrutinise their feelings and determine whether they are a good or bad guide for taking action. Children will also spend time reflecting on their emotional well-being, and what they can do to help themselves stay emotionally healthy.
Children will be able to discuss biased gender stereotypes. Children will also consider how the polished ‘reality’ of the media can affect how people feel about themselves.

Jesus my friend – children will revisit Jesus’ parable of The Prodigal Son; which children will have first heard a simplified version of the parable in Key Stage One. This parable shows that God loves us, and nothing we can do will stop Him from loving us. Through the story of the two brothers, children will learn about different types of sin, and the importance of forgiveness in relationships.

Safe in my Body – Children will learn that moving into the real world and considering what physical contact is appropriate and inappropriate. Children will be introduced to the term ‘abuse’ and discuss different kinds of abuse, including sexual abuse, here referred to as ‘abuse of private parts’. Children will be asked to think of trusted adults that they can talk to about any issues they may face.

A community of love – children will their developing
understanding of the community aspect of the Trinity and be encouraged to think about what the Trinity means for them and their communities.
They will briefly discuss marriage and likens the love of a family to the love between the Trinity.

What is puberty and changing bodies
Learn what changes happen to them during puberty.
Children explore the importance of respecting our bodies as a gift from God in very practical ways, such as clothing, food and physical exercise. Children will reflect on their bodies as a gift from God that He wants us to look after and respect.
Pupils will look at the word ‘puberty’ and learn how puberty is part of God’s plan to help us love others more. Pupils will use the correct terminology for genitalia relating to the discussion on puberty and explore some of the specific physical and emotional changes that will take place for boys and girls over the coming years.

Children will identify behaviour that is wrong, unacceptable, unhealthy or risky, and they will be reminded that feelings and actions are different things. They will learn that particular feelings and pressures may lead us to act inappropriately, and so they will learn how to build resilience against those feelings by practising thankfulness. Children will be given an opportunity to be thankful for people and experiences in their lives.
With the underpinning knowledge that we were handmade by God with our parents’ help, children will go on a journey to discover how life is created in the womb.

Children to identify more complex
relationships in their lives, including family, friends and other people; they will explore how to relate to people within these different relationships. Children will also discuss what it means to be a good friend, and learn some strategies to use when relationships become difficult.

Children will learn key information and facts about drugs, alcohol and tobacco. The teaching is underpinned with the religious understanding that consuming these substances is harmful to our bodies, and therefore God’s creation. Pupils will consider a range of scenarios in order to learn about making the right choices when it comes to substances.
Pupils will learn how First Aid, quick reactions and staying calm during an emergency can make the difference between life and death. Children will learn that they don’t need to feel daunted, because God holds us up and gives us strength.

Children will explores how we can put love into action in the communities we live in. We look at how the Church has grown out of God’s love for us and how it can be an example and a means of loving and caring for others.

Children will hear and experience the Gospel story of Jesus calming the storm. The story will be repeated in various ways, and through times of discussion,
imaginative reflection and creative response, children will learn that they are created by God who cares for us and wants us to put our faith in Him

Children will learn about some of the pressures pubescent young people can face from others, their own expectations and the media. Through exploring these and other pressures that they may experience, children will develop ideas on how to build resilience through thankfulness.
Pupils will observe and discuss how people behave and react to their feelings and emotions, and how these feelings can change quickly.

Children will look at the nature of God’s call to love others. The pupils look in detail and imaginatively at the story of Zacchaeus’ conversion and explore ways in which they can hear God’s call in their lives.
Children will learn about spoken and unspoken pressure that they might experience, particularly from their peers. Children will identify different ways in which people can experience pressure, e.g. rejection, reasoning, put downs, looks etc, and they will learn about and discuss strategies to resist pressure.

Sharing isn’t always caring and types of abuse.

Children making safe and sensible decisions about what content to share or not share, including photos, passwords and other personal information. Children will discuss how this can be damaging and dangerous, and will rules to remember to keep themselves safe.
Children will be introduced to the term ‘abuse’ and discuss the different kinds of abuse, including sexual. Children will be asked to think of trusted adults that they can talk to about any issues they may face.

Children will increase their understanding of the Holy Trinity using scripture activities and prayer. Children will also consider how they can allow the Holy Spirit to work through them to bring God’s love into the world.
Children will learn how God wants us to live in society with each other. They will learn the principles of CST, how we can apply these to daily life and how ‘loving our neighbour’ might mean acting in ways that affect global
organisations as well as individuals.

About the unique growth and development of humans, and the changes that boys will experience during puberty. About the need to respect their bodies as a gift from God to be looked after well, and treated appropriately;
The need for modesty and appropriate boundaries.

Children will have an understanding of where babies come from. Children will learn how about the miraculous process of human life is conceived and developed in the womb.
Children will learn about how girls manage their periods, and understand some of their possible side effects. They will learn why periods happen; that fertility is necessary to bring a child into the world; and how periods are part of God’s plan for creation.

Children will consider different ways in which children might feel pressured by those around them, particularly their peers. This session discusses the issue of consent and bodily autonomy, and it equips children with the ability and confidence to say ‘no’.
Children continue to explore the pressures that they can feel from peers and adults, and how to cope with and resist these pressures. But some of the strongest pressures that young people can experience come from themselves, and these have a huge effect on how they relate to the world and the people around them.

Impacted lifestyles, Making good choices. Giving assistance.
Children will have some basic First Aid knowledge, including the recovery position and DR ABC. This is underpinned with God created us to love Him and to love others, so we should look out for and care for one another.
Pupils will consider scenarios where people feel pressured to use them. Children will be encouraged to use their scientific knowledge and religious understanding to cope with pressured situations and make good choices. The teaching is underpinned with the religious understanding that consuming harmful substances is harmful to our bodies.

Reaching out - Pupils’ continue their learning on Catholic Social Teaching (CST), recapping the principles and showing how they are relevant day to day. Children will look at current news stories, applying Catholic Social Teaching to
analyse the issues and come up with ways of reaching out to others and spreading God’s love in their communities.
