Chicken in Ghana How does our nutrition influence the life of the people in Ghana

1.1 Lokal chicken in the past

• 3000 live Chicken on the market per day • 80% Self-Production • chicken is not so big but healthy • Ghana chicken production almost impossible • less jobs • international trade critical • misgiving: 5-10 years no poultry farmer more • market share minimal —&gt; not able to compete

• locals need political strategies and financial support • no big farms,they have an average of 50 chickens • butchers swear by local beef, pork and lamb • Feed is too expensive

Since the trend towards low-fat nutrition, nowhere else are so many chicken breasts eaten as in Germany. The chicken leftovers are then shipped frozen to Afrika. Using Ghana as example the film documents the effects of these exports on local markets and the health of the people. Because there are no hygiene regulations and often no electricity many people fall ill from defrosted meat.

1.2 Imported chicken today

• have financial Support • demand is immense • import is half as cheap through subsidies • imported chicken costs 1€ per kg —&gt; unrivaled • meat keeps thawing—&gt; power outages and 40 degree in the shade - people get sick • In a year 300000 ton chickens from Europe, Brazil and USA are imported • market has manly imported produktions . Poultry producers of Ghana cannot compete and have to close. Only 5 % farmers are left.

Pay attention to the quality and origin of some products

Remember what consequences your trade means for others 

Drive less car especially on short journeys

Support corporations in developing countries

Rüdiger Kaufmann has about 600 chickens. They‘re about 18 weeks old when he gets them and stay with him about 15 months.

They‘re kept in animalfriendly husbandry. The chickens have a lot of room for themselves and have enouth spots to withdraw from the other animals.

He sells his eggs in Waibstadt and Daisbach. You can also buy boiling hens, which are slaughlered locally. Rüdinger Kaufmann does not want to work with big enterprise but wants to as  much as possible by himself and especially locally. And in the end the most important thing to him is that his hens live a happy life

This is not very usually that chicken can life like that. In the most big Companies Chicken have not so much space to life. Many chicken grow up in factory farming.
