One of the best places to view Chimpanzees!
Located on the western border of Tanzania, beside Lake Tanganyika is Tanzania's smallest national park, called Gombe National Park. The park is best known for it's Chimpanzees. It's also very famous for Primatogist Jane Goodall, who spent years at the park studying the Chimps.
Who is Jane Goodall?
In 1965, The Gombe Stream Research Center was founded to further assist Jane's research on Chimps. The Center is still being used to this day. Jane has established "Jane Goodall Institues" in nine different countries including Canada.
Primatogist Jane Goodall came to Gombe National Park in 1960. She spent her time at the park, studying the Chimps and their ways. She has contributed tremendously to science, by providing information on our closest relative. The park has become famous for her too.
About the Park.
The park was first formed in 1986. Before it opened, time was put into getting the Chimps accustomed to the human observers, therefore Jane Goodall could study them. The town of Kigoma is about 15km north of the park, the only route to the park is from Kigoma. Visitors can only get to the park by boat.
Get close to the Chimps like never before!
In the morning, visitors can go on a walk with a guide into the forest. Visitors get the chance to see the Chimps up close. They get to observe the Chimps eat, play, interact with others and more! A once in a lifetime opportunity! However, there are certain rules set in place to protect the Chimps and visitors.
See tons of different species!
Apart from the Chimpanzees that inhabit the park, visitors get the chance to see lots of different animals. Other animals that live in the park are, Beachcomber olive Baboons, Red tailed Monkeys, Red Colobus, Vervet Monkeys and Blue Monkeys. There's more animals like Bushpig, Bushbucks, Giant Kingfish, Crowned Eagle, Trumpeter Hornbills and over fifty other species of animals!
There's over three hundred fish including cichlid fish, in Lake Tanganyika. There's more then two hundred birds species. It's ocassional to see Hippos and rare to see Leopards! There's lots of wild life to see at Gombe Stream National Park!
