Things That Make Me Happy

Welcome to first grade! My name is Mrs. Pearson. There are so many fun and exciting things that first graders get to learn and I am so happy I get to be your teacher this year. Here are a few things about me: I live in West Jordan with my husband and two kids. We love to go on trips together, play outside, and have movie nights. Here is a secret you should know about first grade.... It is the very best grade in the world! I hope you are ready to work hard and have fun. I can't wait to meet you!

Come to school happy, healthy, and ready to learn! In our class, we are safe, respectful, and responsible. We focus on these three words and discuss how we can be safe, respectful, and responsible in different ways. We celebrate successful behavior daily. When a mistake or poor choice is made, we discuss what happened, decide how to make a better choice, and then make a plan.

Take-home books will come home on Monday.&nbsp;Students read the books during the week and return them on Friday.&nbsp; Communication Folders will come home weekly on Monday with important papers and the sight words we are working on at school. Thanks for your support in helping your first grader remember to bring their folders back to school on Fridays! Sight Words:&nbsp;Please take some time to practice reading the sight words (Heart words) during the week if your child does not know these words. We will provide several activities that you can use to practice these words with your child. *Reading with your child at home is critical for their reading development. Please read with your child often.

Antelope Canyon's electronic device policy is that "Cellular device use during classroom time, instructional activities and field trips is prohibited. Cellular devices must remain off during these times. Exceptions to this policy may be granted by school administration on a case by case basis to accommodate family emergencies or medical necessity." The office is amazing at contacting parents and students when needed. If you need to get a message to your child quickly during the school day, please call the office. Phones must be kept in backpacks during the school day. Watches can be worn unless they are a distraction. Students will be given 1 warning. If the watch continues to distract from their learning they will need to put it into their backpack. I understand that there may be exceptions to this policy due to medical needs. Please contact me if there are any concerns.

Communication between home and school is so important! I will email you in addition to using the free app Remind to communicate with parents. You can join my class by texting @pearson-1&nbsp;to&nbsp;81010. Remind allows me to send out a group text, but allows you to respond via text privately.

Here are the volunteer opportunities in our class Take Home Books Students are provided with books to take home weekly. It would be really helpful if our class had a parent switch out the books weekly on either Friday or Monday. Data Notebooks We use data notebooks to show student growth. Having a parent come monthly to help students track data would be amazing! You may help students track data for sight words, fluency, accuracy, or other 1st-grade concepts. Room/Class Parties We need a room parent to head up the class parties. Additional parent helpers will be needed for the parties (Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day.) Centers/Math Walk We have center/small group reading time twice a week. We have a math walk Monday-Thursday where students go into skill-based groups to work on math at their level. Extra help during these times will let me work with small groups. All volunteers must be fingerprinted. Once you are fingerprinted it will last throughout elementary school. This process can take up to 3 weeks. If you want to volunteer at any point during the school year or go on a field trip start the fingerprinting process soon. You start this process in the office.

Antelope Canyon has a <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cBG_SCxIw-atwFJKXnWa9a_wyL3d6dHe/view">Code of Conduct</a>. This helps students understand school wide expectations and what will happen for following and not following those expectations. The Antelope Canyon Elementary school wide expectations are outlined below.&nbsp;

In our class we will spotlight each first grader. In September, your child will be given a large paper star to take home and decorate. They can decorate their star with things that describe them (pictures, stickers, drawings, etc. of favorite foods, colors, activities....) Please include a picture of your child on the star. We will display the stars in the classroom all year. Please return the star once your child has completed it.

The programs we will be using this year are FOSS science, author studies for language arts, Math Expressions, Blast Foundations for phonics/spelling, and Walk to Read for reading. We are going to be using the program Second Step for social and emotional learning. During social studies, we will be learning about different communities, cultures, and our place in this world. 

The items on the list will be used during the regular school day. The school will furnish these items, but you may choose to provide supplies on a voluntary basis. All supplies that are provided will be shared with the class as a whole. If you are voluntarily providing these items, please send them on the first day of school. We will use these supplies as needed throughout the year. First Grade Supply List ● Water bottle with student’s name clearly marked ● 1 Dozen Pencils ● 1 Box of 24 crayons ● 2-4 Glue sticks ● Colored pencils (12 pack) ● Black Expo fine tip markers ● Washable markers The following items are always welcome and appreciated. ● Sanitizing Wipes ● Facial Tissue

I know how important your child's birthday is to them, so I want to make sure to recognize them. You do not need to send a treat, but if you choose to, it needs to be a nut- free, store-purchased individually wrapped treat. You can also send non-food items like pencils, erasers, stickers, etc. This is especially helpful for students with allergies. Summer birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the school year. Birthday party invitations can not be delivered at school.

I want to get to know each child in my class. The "Get to Know You Bag" will help your child share what makes them awesome. On the first day of school, your child will get a brown paper bag to take home. There will be instructions about what to put in the bag to share with the class. Please return it by Monday, August 28th. We will spend the first few weeks of school getting to know each other.
