Every Monday afternoon throughout the academic year, we have Muddy Mondays. We will explore our local area including the beach, farm, woods, spinney and environmental area. Literacy
Reading- Children have a daily phonics session which follows 'Letters and Sounds' and begins a few weeks after starting school. This helps ensure rapid reading progress from their starting points. We read stories and poems to the children daily both in our class and at the Library.

Writing- We encourage children to 'talk first' and to say what they are wanting to communicate. They learn to tell stories using actions and a story map to enable more confident writing. We encourage children to sit correctly and hold the pencil or pen in a correct grasp when writing.

Reading at home
The children have a decodable reading book that they 'read' in phonics daily. This book is matched to their phonics knowledge and is one they can be successful in reading. This book will be sent home every Monday and must be returned on Friday. You can support your child with this book if you wish. They also bring a book of their choice home every Monday. The idea is that they can look at the pictures, you can read and share it with them so that they develop a love of reading.

The children will also have a reading dairy where you can make brief comments about their reading.
We will soon be starting our very own Ladybird Reading Challenge where there will be rewards for reading at home and school.
