This book is dedicated to Ms. Jennifer Read’s kindergarten class of 2017-2018 who very kindly invited me along on their field trip to Cherry Point Beach. I thank them for the opportunity to learn with them that beautiful day.

I express my deep gratitude to Sally and to Swustanulwut Delores Louie, our elder who generously reviewed the Hul’q’umi’num language.
I grew up in Cowichan. While I did put this book together, I don’t feel comfortable claiming author status for a work that was made possible solely by generosity of spirit and the beauty of our home.
