Nikolaus August Otto was a great engineer and although he was very inexperienced he reinvented the engine and made it perfect for transportation when it was at its peek. This engine convinced society to make carts and wagons a thing of the past.

Nikolaus August Otto was born in Holzhausen, Germany on June 10, 1832, and he was the youngest of six children. His father was the village’s postmaster, and he passed away soon after Nikolaus was born. So, Nikolaus didn’t get to spend much time with his father. Nikolaus Otto excelled in school.

Therefore, his mother planned for him to get a technical education, but because of the failed German revolution around 1840, there was a decline in the economy, things got rough, and they could no longer afford it. His mother then decided he’d be better off as a merchant. After six years of good performance, he moved to the high school in Langenschwalbach until 1848. He did not complete his studies but was cited for good performance.

Nikolaus Otto married Anna Gossi, and as far as we know he had one child named Gustav Otto. Gustav passed away on February 28, 1926 at the age of 43 from suicide.
