“Perfecting” Poetry 

Hard, round tube filled with air Flat on my stomach, laying face first Giddy with excitement ZOOM! I was off, snow pelting my face Bump, bump. SWOOSH! Suddenly, I was a bullet in the air Until I wasn’t… Excitement turns to slight panic Dad’s voice reaches my ears As the wind roars on I hear, “THAT WAS INSANE” I feel better as we reach the bottom Together… We laugh like two friends sharing an inside joke Feeling proud we survived as adrenaline fades away Looking at a tube reminds me of that day

Short 3 line poem, with 5 syllables in the first line 7 syllables in the second line and then 5 syllables in the 3rd line, surprise in the 3rd line.

Scared, small, hopeful, lost Suddenly without my mom Mustering courage Life is rose coloured Now as I age through Covid I see shades of grey Fresh air and strong trees Fire challenges the forest Will we ever change

Comparison of unlike things, without using like or as (my heart is a red rose that grows for you)

Family is like the spine of a book, strong as it holds the story together It is the egg in baking, the binding element which brings the recipe together It is the weather that can change from stormy to clear skies, all within a day Or the spacesuit keeping you safe for when there is no air left to breathe Family is the needle and thread awaiting to try to mend broken seams It is also like an iceberg, where a large part may be hidden to outsiders Family is like lighting, you never know when, or if, it will strike you But in the end family is like a rose, it has thorns but it smells sweet, with many layers

Comparison between two unlike things using “like” or “as” (as cold as ice)

My Worldview (free verse) My worldview is like a puzzle Before me sits 1000 pieces And I have no clue where to start One by one pieces are placed and they begin to form a picture Earth is to be respected It is like a bubble, floating in space A beautiful thing to look at yet vulnerable to humans One small move has a big impact Like the pushing of the first domino Although hard to piece together I appreciate the world like a fresh baked cookie

Hi, My name is Kira B. I’m currently in grade 8 and a PLP learner at Seycove. My favourite sport is rock climbing, but I don’t do it very often because of Covid.  I grew up enjoying the outdoors and fresh air. I love pasta, burgers, steak, hamburgers, panini‘s, tacos, and more! (I’m a foodie)

At first I dreaded this project, the reason for that was because I’ve done so many poetry projects before hand in elementary school and they where all the same. But throughout this project I’ve actually learned some new terms and types of poems. I have definitely improved in writing poems and I think the favourite type of poem I’ve learned was a found poem.

Isolated into separate worlds Jobs, books, games We’d escaped from each other And wasted time But there is the future

I am a student That enjoys hikes I love to watch everything come together As I bake… My friends mean a lot to me And so does my family The colour yellow brings me joy But I still like earthy shades I have brown hair and chocolate eyes I&apos;m half Filipino and also Caucasian It’s a glass half full Except on Mondays… I play saxophone and piano And I would like to learn guitar I have two siblings But I don’t have a dog Sleeping is my jam As well as some jazz And I enjoy reading books Like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson I’m more into fantasy instead of real stuff It’s nice to escape from this world I find crazy

Worldview stumbles in Full of life and wonder Looking weathered And rough around the edges As it stares into my eyes it feels like an x-ray It knows everything about me A mirror of my past and present I hear faint music playing It smells like stale coffee and sweet pastries Worldview smiles sadly as it stands still As it takes a step forward It trips on what appears to be nothing And vanishes before it reaches the ground

I open a book It smells new and fresh As its musty odd scent fills my nose I feel the smooth pages, the sharp edges As I read in my head, the words pour out of the paper and fill my brain with new found things I get sucked in and I see everything as if I was there I learn lessons and facts I never knew The words continue, creating characters in my mind Voices of the people come alive Making the book more real. I feel stories of pain, power and perseverance It’s through stories I learn how the world works, They help shape and create my worldview “Books are for nerds” Is what I hear more than you would think
