I'm Unique!

Today, Mrs. Stalter wants to teach her students a valuable lesson about being unique. She wants them to understand that each and every one of them is different in their own way and they should embrace their uniqueness. First, she decides to read a book about "Elmer", the colorful elephant, with the class.

As Mrs. Stalter read the book with the class, she asked them "What do you think about Elmer? Have you ever felt different from your friends like Elmer does?" One girl raises her hand and shares, "I feel different like Elmer because my hair is red." Another boy raises his hand and shares, "I feel different because I like to draw at recess instead of play kickball with my friends".

Mrs. Stalter was very impressed with her student's responses and praises her students for sharing. As she keeps reading, she says "Don't you see that being different is what makes us unique? Being unique is awesome! Let's all close our eyes and think of some things that make each of us unique!"

Then, Mrs. Stalter gives the students a picture of Elmer, with all of his patches. But, they are not colored in. She tells the students to color in the empty patches with pictures of what makes them unique. "Remember to label your unique elephant with your name", she says.

The children took the lead, coloring in their elephants, with a new-found confidence in their uniqueness and Mrs. Stalter enjoyed teaching today's lesson. I wonder what they will learn tomorrow?
