World Language Honor Society Virtual Induction Ceremony 2021

Hello! My name is Jake Greenberg and I am very proud to be here—even in this virtual format—speaking to you as the president of the Spanish Honor Society. Genuinely, over the years that I have studied Spanish, I have developed an undeniable passion. Delving into this language has been not just a homework assignment, but a privilege. However, I understand that sometimes it is difficult to see the purpose of learning another language, because I have faced that same dilemma. I always wanted to apply my skills outside of the classroom, so I kept practicing and learning, until an opportunity appeared last summer. I attended a summer program in California; I expected there to be a lot of Spanish-speaking people there and I was right: for the first time, I met people whose first language was Spanish. Interacting with these people contributed the most to my learning. The conversations we had were about typical topics, like what we study in school and what we like to do, but they left a huge mark on me as I embarked on my journey to fluency.

Communicating with these people was the first step on this journey, and said journey will not stop when I graduate from Syosset. Although I have not yet had the opportunity to go to a Spanish-speaking country, I will not let anything prevent me from using my bilingualism to foster good relations between English and Spanish speakers. Today, racism and a lack of mutual respect divide us greatly. But, I am confident that all Spanish students in this Honor Society will leave this school prepared to take action. As I did last summer, they will soon realize the importance of bilingualism. And when they graduate, they will change the world for life.

When I was little, my sisters used to joke that the best thing about speaking another language was the ability to make fun of their brother and him not know. Now, I know that words like “annoying” and “short” aren’t nice words. Despite the fact that these comments were jokes, I think that they were close to the most important thing about language: when you can speak another language, you are united with every speaker of that language and you preserve that culture. Globalization is a characteristic trait of the 21st century. Globalization reinforced the world economy, but also started the deterioration of unique cultures. Throughout the world, English, the language of trade, is more important. While the importance of English grows, the traditions of other cultures become less important. If this trend continues, indigenous cultures will gradually disappear. Language however, is an obstacle to this prophecy. Language is a factor of unity because language allows the people to recount common experiences in their culture. When people talk, they use distinctive colloquial and slang words. For example, in the United States, we have idiomatic phrases that other countries don’t use like “break a leg”. It’s true that Italy has a phrase with a similar meaning “In bocca al lupo” [In the mouth of the wolf], but these phrases aren’t very connected. Using these phrases are unique to a culture and to a language. Additionally, when a&nbsp;person studies a language, he or she obtains an understanding of the cuisine, festivities, history etc. of that culture. Therefore, as long as there are people that want to study a language, they will discuss these subjects and will use unique words because they must. In this sense, they invoke the shared traditions and lifestyle and promote unity with speakers of their language and culture throughout the world.

Good Afternoon, everyone. My name is Alexandra Marin. With the world rapidly evolving and with the current chaotic state of the planet, it is important for us to focus on skills and hobbies that ground us and potentially open up new opportunities for the future. I can proudly say that in my three years of learning Japanese with Lustig Sensei and my amazing classmates, I have discovered my ability to learn and study a new language, to communicate interpersonally with my classmates, and to do advanced research. These skills will help me in all my future endeavors. Our process of learning Japanese - while fun&nbsp;- was also filled with challenges. The three different writing systems- hiragana, katakana, and kanji- are all different and beautiful in their own way, and need to be mastered to achieve reading fluency. Weekly kana quizzes were difficult; but we were able to learn at our own pace, and could retake them until we mastered the material. Language is fluid and it is different for everyone; some can absorb it quickly, while others struggle.&nbsp;Being able to learn Japanese at a pace that was right for each of us, allowed us to regulate our own learning and become efficient in the way we chose. In addition to learning the language, we also focused on the fascinating culture of Japan. Our yearly trip to the Japanese Mitsuwa Marketplace offered us an opportunity to practice our skills in a real-life setting, as well as introduce students to specialty foods and cultural items. In the classroom, our studies of Japanese culture included: celebrations of&nbsp;Japanese holidays such as Golden Week, New Year’s Day, and White Day.&nbsp;We practiced Japanese calligraphy; making sushi; traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony; pulling fortune straws for New Year’s Day&nbsp;and guided viewings of animated movies and television shows like Spirited Away, Ponyo, and&nbsp;gokusen in order to get a taste of the culture and see the nuances of the language. Our studies of Japanese culture and language have encouraged us to embrace a growth mindset and I truly believe that everyone in the class has absorbed that idea. We may not be perfect in speaking, but daily exercises and practice, even with the current hybrid system, have enabled us to communicate our thoughts in this dynamic language. I hope that all of my classmates continue to use the idea of growth mindset in their future endeavors, and I thank Lustig Sensei for fostering an environment in which we could practice and nurture this important skill.&nbsp;&nbsp; Thank you for your time, and I applaud everyone involved with this wonderful program.&nbsp;

Speaking French is something that has become very important to me and I can see myself doing it for a long time. Throughout my life, I have been interested in biology and medicine. But, it wasn’t until I started taking French in sixth grade that I discovered my passion for languages, specifically French. I would like to continue studying French in college and I only looked at schools that placed importance on foreign languages and study abroad programs. In my future career as a physician, speaking French will allow me to work with French speaking doctors and patients. Learning French has also opened my eyes to all of the beautiful languages of the world. For the past two years I have been taking Japanese at the high school and I want to start learning Spanish because I am hoping to study both French and Spanish in college. Speaking French will also be advantageous for me when applying to medical schools and residency programs. I would like to be a member of this organization to help other students who are passionate about French. The Syosset French department has given me a lot throughout my academic career and I am thankful for the opportunity to give back to it.
