What is the Hindus caste system and how did it become what it is now ?
Camille Mercier
"Hindus Caste pyramid" by Camille Mercier
Even if the caste system is illegal in India, after existing for at least 3 000 years, this biased environment still persists everywhere across India and in every sector .
First and foremost, the Indian caste system takes its origin in the Hindu Religion ,more precisely in the “Manusmriti” , the “most important and authoritative” book on Hindu's laws as well as the oldest one 2nd century .It divides people into différent caste according to the origin of the families ,deciding on the value of one’s life.

With this rigid hierarchy ,the upper castes tend to profit from their privileges and disregard inferior castes ,leading to violence and injustice .
A good example of this violence is the protest of the Jat community (mostly land owners),caused by a law about job quotas for poor upper caste members. The angry rioters seized a canal (Water Board) that was supplying water to a Dalit community, leaving them without water for many days.
The Vedas "Rig-Veda"
The organization around caste was really strengthened with British colonialism, indeed it was easier to govern over a population already controlling its own members.
As we know Hinduism and the caste system were not invented as an European concept, it has existed for long before colonization.
However the colons did play a role in the creation of the curent caste hierarchy.
What we call Hindu can be said to have existed only because of an amalgam of many group independent of Islam, Christianity or Judaism, even if the individual did not share the same belief .
One of the main factors to categorize these communities was the use of the Sanskrit language.
Maybe it is because of the differences in the culture of these communities, but when they were put together by the colon, that led to the situation they are now in.
And maybe this is the reason why communities such as the Sikhs are not considered part of the caste system, because they included islam as a part of their belief which differentiated them from Hindus.

The vedas are the religious texts which inform the religion of Hinduism

Nowadays, most Indian dot not feel like there is a lot of caste discrimination, however it’s not as easy to say when we see the violence made against the Dalit community and other “Scheduled “Castes

SCOURGE OF FORCED MARRIAGES AMONG DALITS CHILDREN AND THE IMPACT FOR YOUNG WOMEN.
PEXELS, Mumbai, MH, India
Evolution since the 2000s.
The poorest families and from lowest castes are the principal concerned : poverty, lack of education, ancestral traditions make the marriage mandatory.
Being burdens for the families, daughters, since their birth, are considered as property. Frequently, girls are abducted by their future husbands, a practice that few families question.
In India, almost 99 % of people in the Dalits community fall victim to child marriage. Three out of four Dalits marry in their teens or even earlier and sometimes not even 6 years old according to a study carried out in 2012 by the ONG Plan International, Save the Children and World Vision. The caste to which you belong is always highligthed, especially in marriages because it determines who you marry.
Poverty is the first reason of forced marriages. Dalits parents can’t support the education costs of their children so they have to take them out of school. Consequently, for them marriages are solutions to be safe and avoiding harassement. Moreover, there is a very big lack of awareness of the women. Many women still do not know or see the negative impact of child marriages because it’s rooted in tradition.

Women's resistance to forced
marriage for their freedom
The struggles within the Dalit community, particularly for girls, are severe as they have very little education. More and more girls are refusing or fleeing forced marriages to secure their future. Nepal banned child marriage in 1963. Nevertheless, according to UNICEF, four out of ten girls are still married before the age of 18. The girls who have managed to escape forced marriage are those who have fought and educated themselves. They have become emancipated and are no longer under the sway of the Indian patriarchy. Girls' education is everything: many girls have graduated and found good jobs, particularly in the police or as nurses. This gives Indians a little hope and the will to keep up the momentum. These women are real role models for Indian girls.
Inter-caste wedding
In India, inter-caste marriage is often a family choice. According to tradition, young girls must marry a man chosen by their parents and belonging to the same community. However, Inter-caste marriages were gradually accepted as society evolved. The marriage of a 'Dalit' - an untouchable - to a spouse from another caste remains a rare phenomenon, about 5% of the marriages in India are inter-caste marriages, according to the Studies conducted by the NCAER in 2016. Inter-caste marriage depends very much on the tolerance of the families, some accepting it and others opposing it, which sometimes leads their child to commit a crime of honour and marry despite their disagreement and caste difference. In a 2010 report, the NCW documented 326 cases of honour crime in the past year, the majority
of which were due to inter-caste marriages.
