On December 23, 1854, Victoriano Huerta was born in Colotlán, Mexico. He was born to Indian parents. Huerta was taught how to read by the Village priest and he was said to be a great student. Huerta earned money as a bookkeeper in Colotlán.
Huerta wanted to join the military. So, he sought admission to the Military College of Chapultepec. At the age of 17, Huerta entered the military academy in January of 1872. In the military academy, he took classes to become an artillery officer. An artillery officer is someone who manages personnel and weapons operations. He also took classes to study topography and astronomy. Huerta was made the second lieutenant by December 1875.

After his studies, he rose to the position of general in the Mexican Federal Army. Huerta rose to this position while Porfirio Díaz was still president of Mexico. Huerta admired Díaz, but Huerta worked for Francisco Madero. He worked for Madero after Díaz’s resignation from his presidency. Díaz resigned because Madero and others challenged his regime. They led a revolt that kick-started the Mexican Revolution.
