Victoriano: The Cowardly Man

Eventually, Madero became the new president. He appointed Huerta as chief of staff of the federal army. Little did he know, that would be a big mistake.

Venustiano Carranza's Plan de Guadalupe pushed for Huertas resignation. This movement for Huertas resignation started in Coahuila by Carranza. Villa and Obregón also led rebellious oppositions in Chihuahua and Sonora. Zapata led a rebellion of his own as well. His rebellion focused on land reforms. He led the rebellion in the mountains of the south. These revolutionary leaders worked as a team against Huerta. Huerta was in trouble. These leaders would not go down without a fight. Especially since they had the support of the president of the U.S.

Woodrow Wilson was the U.S. president that supported the constitutionalists in Mexico. Wilson wasn't a fan of Huerta and refused to recognize him. In February 1914, Wilson allowed the constitutionalists to buy ammunition in the U.S. They could buy military equipment, ammo, and weapons. But, Huerta could not get shipments. Wilson had a desire to overthrow Huerta. His desire grew even more after what happened with the U.S. Marines in Tampico. When U.S. Marines landed in Tampico, Mexican officials arrested them for some time. Huerta didn't apologize nor wanted to apologize for what happened. This caused Wilson to become more involved in the Mexican revolution. In April, Huerta was going to receive a shipment from Germany. Because of this, Wilson sent U.S. Naval forces to seize Veracruz. This was to make sure Huerta would not be able to get his hands on the arms (weapons) shipment from Germany.

When Huerta went to the United states in 1915, he was arrested and held in custody at Fort Bliss. This was because Huerta promoted a rebellion in Mexico. He was also arrested for conspiring to violate U.S. neutrality laws. Huertas trial was set for January 1916. Unfortunately for Huerta, his drinking increased which affected his health. His health was deteriorating, so he was allowed to go back home with his family for a month. Rumors of a revolt were rising once again and he was moved back to Fort Bliss. His health was deteriorating, and it wasn't long before his death. Huerta died from cirrhosis of the liver. He died while he was still in custody at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.

After what had happened in Veracruz, Huerta was fearful. HE feared that Americans would come after Mexico City next. Because of this, he called troops from around the country to protect Mexico City. The revolutionaries increased their campaigns against the government after this. On June 23, Villa took the city of Zacatecas. This was a big loss for Huerta. Huerta was being defeated by the revolutionaries. Then on July 15, 1914, Huerta submitted his letter of resignation to the Mexican Congress. Five days later, July 20, 1914, he fled to Barcelona, Spain.

On December 23, 1854, Victoriano Huerta was born in Colotlán, Mexico. He was born to Indian parents. Huerta was taught how to read by the Village priest and he was said to be a great student. Huerta earned money as a bookkeeper in Colotlán.

Huerta wanted to join the military. So, he sought admission to the Military College of Chapultepec. At the age of 17, Huerta entered the military academy in January of 1872. In the military academy, he took classes to become an artillery officer. An artillery officer is someone who manages personnel and weapons operations. He also took classes to study topography and astronomy. Huerta was made the second lieutenant by December 1875.

Madero was left with no choice but to resign after being forced by Huerta. When Madero was out of office, Huerta took power for himself. Later, Madero would be executed on Huertas orders. Madero was now completely out of the picture. Huerta got rid of the legislature. This meant that there wouldn't be an assembly meeting to make laws. Victoriano would have complete power, and he did. He established a military dictatorship instead of having a legislature. The military and Huerta had total control of Mexico.

Victoriano Huerta came to power in 1913. As we know, Victoriano Huerta became chief of staff of the federal army for Madero. Unfortunately for Madero, part of the army turned against him in February 1913. Maderos army betrayed him. This rebellion started in Mexico City and Huerta joined forces with them. This specific group was the rebels.

After his rise to power, he was confronted by constitutionalist/revolutionist forces. It was obvious to everyone that Huerta was not capable of ruling Mexico. These forces were led by well-respected leaders. These leaders included Venustiano Carranza, Álvaro Obregón, Pancho Villa, and Emiliano Zapata. They all weren't happy with what Huerta was doing to Mexico and needed to put a stop to his actions.

After his studies, he rose to the position of general in the Mexican Federal Army. Huerta rose to this position while Porfirio Díaz was still president of Mexico. Huerta admired Díaz, but Huerta worked for Francisco Madero. He worked for Madero after Díaz’s resignation from his presidency. Díaz resigned because Madero and others challenged his regime. They led a revolt that kick-started the Mexican Revolution. &nbsp;
