Why do we illuminate our surroundings at night? To see better, to be in a nicer environment, to work easier, to feel safer... If we work in trade or tourism, to make good advertisements and gain customers. But unfortunately, there are very bad night lighting practices both in Turkey and all over the world. This misapplication is becoming more and more common and increasing.

Types of Light Pollution
Light pollution includes all types of ineffective lighting. The main ones are:
- Light encroachment (Light Overflow): Illumination of unwanted or unneeded place of light.
- Glare: Deterioration of vision and loss of visibility of the object by exceeding the level of illumination that the eye is accustomed to. If the light source is more prominent than the object it illuminates, the illumination is bad.
- Vertical light: Light that goes directly to the sky. It is literally wasted light, lost in space. This is the worst light pollution for astronomers and anyone who wants to watch the sky. As a result of the scattering of light by dust and molecules in the atmosphere, it causes the natural brightness of the sky to deteriorate and increase. Luminaires that create glare and light encroachment also send light vertically. The sea of light seen from the plane above the cities is mostly lights misdirected upwards.

- Excessive amount of light: Light that exceeds the amount of illumination required to do a particular job. More light does not always mean good lighting.

Sources of light pollution:
- Road, street and street lighting
- Lighting of parks, gardens and sports areas
- Exterior lighting of touristic facilities and buildings
- Billboards
- Lighting for security purposes
- Lights overflowing from houses and buildings

Light pollution means wasted money:
The production cost of light is high. Glare, light encroachment, vertical and excessive light means wasted energy. According to a study by the International Dark Sky Association, up to 30% of the light is wasted in such outdoor lighting. The cost of these malpractices has been calculated to be $2 billion per year in the United States. In the UK, wrong lighting causes energy losses of £53m a year. Although no research has been done in this direction in Turkey,
The first evaluations are that there is at least 30% energy loss. Taking precautions against light pollution means setting up a power plant.

Since natural resources such as coal, oil and water are used while producing light, wasted light also means wasting natural resources.
Light pollution also affects natural life:
It's not just government budgets or those who want to watch the night sky that suffer from poor lighting. For example, for migratory birds, light pollution is a new danger: Birds are very useful not only for humans, but for all living life on earth. They consume billions of insects and flies every year and spread billions of plant seeds. Migratory birds, especially those that feed on small flies, travel at night. Some species travel millions of kilometers. While they partially find their way from the constellations, the lights emanating from tall structures such as skyscrapers and lighthouses are attractive to them.

As a result, the birds either spin around the light until they get tired and fall or
they crash into the building. It is known that thousands of birds died in one night in this way.

The nesting habits of some marine animals are compromised by light pollution or artificial lighting. Only the hatchlings from thousands of sea turtles' eggs
few of them can reach the sea. Turtles, who use the difference in brightness between the sea and the land to reach the sea, die when they turn to land with artificial lighting. According to a study conducted in Australia, corals reject microscopic plants that give them their color due to excessive light falling on them, turn white and become stressed!
