So why did Honda or any other manufacturers decide to make these three-wheel vehicles? Basically, Honda tasked one of their engineers, Osamu Takeuchi to create a new product dealers could sell when motorcycle sales fell off during the winter.
What is the history of Honda three-wheelers?
Honda began researching All Terrain Vehicles as early as 1967. Within 18 months they had designed and shipped their first three-wheeled vehicle, designated US90, as a 1970 model. Honda's dominance of the ATC market peaked in 1984, with 370,000 units shipped and a 69% market share.
When did they start making Honda 3 wheelers?

In 1970, Honda® introduced its first ever three-wheel all-terrain cycle with the US90 (later changed to the ATC90).
