III. The Legend of the Almond Trees

Many, many centuries ago, before Portugal existed, Al-Gharb, today the famous region of the country –Algarve-, belonged to the Moors. The Moors came from the North Africa and had invaded the south of the Iberian Peninsula. The famous young King Ibn-Almundim who had never known defeat reigned. One day, among the prisoners of a battle, he saw for the first time the beautiful Gilda, an elegant blonde princess with blue eyes. - I think you're charming, princess! I'm in love with you! What is your name? - I'm Gilda, the "Beauty of the North". - I am impressed, with so much beauty and sweetness! I will give you freedom if you agree to marry me! - So be it, then!

Our project has had a significant impact on our students, school, teachers and even community. STUDENTS - Cultural awareness and language skills: This experience has exposed them to different cultures, languages, and ways of life, fostering cultural awareness and sensitivity. It has helped break down stereotypes and promote global citizenship. Students have improved their language skills, which will be beneficial for both personal and future professional growth. SCHOOLS / TEACHERS - Internationalization and Quality Improvement: Collaboration with international partners has lead to improvements in the quality of education. Some teachers have adopted innovative teaching methods from partner institutions, enhancing the overall educational experience for students. COMMUNITY - Cultural Enrichment: Parents hosting Erasmus students have benefitted from increased cultural diversity. This exposure to different cultures have enriched the local community and foster tolerance and understanding. In conclusion, this Erasmus project has had a multifaceted impact, extending from individual students to educational institutions and the broader community. It has promoted internationalization, cultural understanding, while enhancing the overall quality of education.

Defeated the Castilians, seven of them fled the battlefield to take shelter in the surroundings. They found shelter in Hope's house, which was empty because Hope had left to help with the ongoing skirmishes. When she returned, having found the door closed, she soon suspected the presence of enemies, and went bustling in looking for enemies. She found the seven men inside her oven, hidden. Summoning them to leave and surrender, and seeing that they didn't answer because they pretended to sleep or not to understand, she beat them with her shovel until they were useless. After what happened, she gathered a group of women and formed a kind of militia that pursued the enemies, beating them without pity or mercy. Victory was achieved and at night a new. Portuguese king was proclaimed. When they returned home, exhausted, Hope and the King's Counselor had a letter waiting for them from the dead King. - You are the legend! Never look for the hero outside yourself! There will always be those who don't believe in your worth, never let that person be you! Both cried with emotion and learned a lesson. Christmas was celebrated, firstly taking into account the cultural diversity of our European partners and the specificities of each country. In the European world there are not many differences to note, but even so, it is still possible to surprise ourselves from a gastronomic point of view and certain habits. This research was carried out throughout the years and the students also contacted their peers from the countries that are part of our project and it was possible to discover many things and enrich themselves culturally. Christmas was also a time to talk about tolerance, to discuss the importance of values and ethics, friendship, loyalty, knowledge and cultural enrichment.

Articulating maths, arts and history. First, it was discussed the importance and significance of a flag in a country. Then, the students presented a PowerPoint on the different applications of isometries in the arts. A short documentary about the mathematician/artist Escher was then shown. The international teams carried out practical work in the field of arts using the concept of isometry,&nbsp;building&nbsp;flags.

The next day there was no time to waste. The Counselor went to ask advice from the only person he trusted: his eldest daughter who was an ugly but kind-hearted brave woman. - Hope, my dear! I don’t know anyone smarter, wiser or stronger. Listen to what I’m about to tell you! Hope said: - I’m not surprised by your revelations, father! As a baker and serving at the table in the village tavern, I can say there are many Spanish invasion rumours. - My dear father, you have got a big dilemma! Too little time to find that hero the king requires! I am really sorry! Over the next few days, the two put together the best of plans in search of a suitable hero. They went up the mountain to speak with the fearsome giant. - Who dares to disturb me? - shouted the biggest man they had seen. Despite agreeing to aggressive help in case of invasion, the Counselor and his daughter weren’t very confident. As strong and large as it was, the giant lacked intelligence. So, they decided to look for the wise man of the village. They brought the man up to date on the situation while they ate dinner by the fireplace in his hut. -I promise to put together a mathematically infallible plan of attack!

In addition to the questionnaires and quizzes common to all members involved in the project, Portugal created others and applied them to the students, on paper, as they worked on the themes mentioned in the project. These were associated with the reading of legends and debates.

This project was based on the practical, creative and enriching study of Legends and Myths in conjunction with other areas of knowledge. Thus, activities were developed, covering the&nbsp;importance of legends and myths in the society. That is to say, that the importance of reading stories , explaining&nbsp;the&nbsp;moral&nbsp;of&nbsp;the story and the values of these narratives is indisputable. There is a lot&nbsp;to learn and to take from these stories.&nbsp; It has been an important source of motivation, contributing&nbsp;to personality development, creative intelligence and increase&nbsp;of love for people and life. In addition, it was also a source of inspiration and learning. Not to mention the connection with cultural activities, aiming to expand the world of ideas, creativity, and thought. It was, therefore, a creative and very enriching project.&nbsp; One of the main objectives was to enhance interest in reading and analyse&nbsp;meanings and lessons, but also to improve the English language, use ICT in a modern and innovative way, discover and share cultural aspects and expand knowledge, at the same time gaining new skills. We are very pleased to share this adventure, which turned out to be much more interesting, enriching and rewarding than it promised.

Once again, a feeling that he had not yet found the perfect hero flooded the counselor and his daughter. - I'm desperate! I don't understand why the king entrusted me with this task! - sighed the counselor. - Because my dear father is capable! - Hope desperately replied. That night, when they returned home, they were both amazed. A small box for each of them, neatly wrapped, stood by the door. When they opened it, they were no less amazed: a mirror! Both were very confused. - What does this mean? Is this a riddle? Oh my God! It is worst every day! The days that followed were very difficult. The king got much worse and in a gray morning he passed away. The people paid homage to him and mourned his loss. His tears were of pain and worry. There was a threat in the air. The King's Counselor and his daughter Hope looked into the mirror and saw their reflection. - There is no one else! There are no heroes! Let's fight! – they conclude very surprised. The King's Counselor gathered the troops and helped them to organize and plan the best defense. The Battle was one of the rare large pitched battles of the Middle Ages between two royal armies and one of the most decisive events in the history of Portugal. It innovating military tactics, allowing dismounted men-at-arms to be able to defeat powerful cavalry.

Legends and Myths Project on board has been a transformative journey for all involved. It has strengthened our institution's internationalization efforts, enriched the lives of our students and staff, and deepened our ties with partner institutions. We are excited about the future and the opportunities for continued collaboration and growth that lie ahead. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to all participants, partners, and stakeholders who made this project possible. This Erasmus project serves as a testament to the power of international cooperation and education in building a more interconnected and understanding world. Thank you so much for being with us!

Storyteller: The following spring, the good king, thinking of Gilda's joy, said to her: - Gilda, come with me to the window and you will contemplate a charming spectacle!... And every year, in early spring, you will see from the top of the tower, the almond trees covered with beautiful white flowers, which will remind you of the snow-covered fields, as in your homeland. The Moorish king and the princess lived long years of intense love, anxiously awaiting, year after year, the spring that brought the wonderful spectacle of the almond trees in bloom.

A book was created with a cultural-historical route to the "Peddy-paper" in the historic center of Guimarães - the birthplace&nbsp;of&nbsp;Portugal.

Storyteller: They were happy for a while, but one day the beautiful princess of the North started to get sick for no apparent reason. One day, an old prisoner, also an inhabitant from the northern lands, asked to be received by the desperate King Ibn-Almundim. - Your Highness, I know what's wrong with the princess! - Tell me then! - shouted the king. - Maybe the princess misses her distant country! Your highness must take her there! - What do you say?! It is very far! However, I must say that I appreciate your help! Storyteller: The king, gentle and understanding with his wife, tried many times to get her to confess to him the reason for her sadness. And, finally, one day, Gilda, in tears and sobs, confessed to him all her sadness: - I miss the snow! I miss the snow-covered fields like back home. Storyteller: The great fear of losing his beloved wife then suggested a good idea to the king. He called the old man and said: - Old prisoner, I'll have to recreate the snow. What do you suggest? - Sir, give the order for almond trees to be planted all over the Algarve, and at the beginning of spring, they will already be covered with flowers. You will see the effect!

Vasco da Gama, the commander of the Portuguese fleet, facing his own fear, stands up and in front of that great stature he dares to ask: -Who are you? The giant, irritated says in a frightening way: -Revenge for the Portuguese who dare to come here! Your future will be terrible! However, after Vasco da Gama’s question, the Giant, astonished by such courage and defiance, changes his speech and says: - Who am I, he asks!!! How dare you to cross the waters of the Cape of Storms?I am your greatest evil! The evil of the immense ocean! I was punished by the Gods as a result of my passion for Tethys, a nymph of the oceans. She despised me and I confess that I did everything to hurt her. And now I’m going to hurt you! - Stay strong and still, sailors! – Cries vasco da Gama, the magnificent sea explorer. And so, the anger of his first words ends in tears of pain. Many Portuguese sailors died in that dark place of raging seas. But, as a result of the Portuguese strength, the black cloud breaks! Adamastor condenses all fears that the dark sea aroused. As they keep going, he becomes weaker, harmless and finally disappears. This way, the great obstacles for Portuguese sailors were overcame as a consequence of their courage. The Cape of Storms came to be called Cape of Good Hope. The Indian Ocean was ahead!

THE PROJECT LEGENDS AND MYTHS ON BOARD

The Giant Adamastor Our legend begins a long long time ago, when the Portuguese wanted to cross the Cape of Good Hope and reach India. The Portuguese, people of sailors, challenged the unknown seas on the sea route to India, the ships had been sailing for 5 days, being close to the Cape of Storms, where the water of the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean meet. Sea conditions were harsh, the weather conditions weren’t helping either. Sailors were tired and scared. Suddenly, before the amazement of the sailors, a dark and immense cloud appeared and covered the sky. The sea was roaring and churning, foreshadowing a terrible fate. The immense figure of the Giant Adamastor comes out from the ocean. The giant looks horrible and angry. The monster challenges the terrified sailors, reduced by their overwhelming presence to the dimension of fragile and defenseless beings. And with a horrendous and thick voice, he announces punishment for “those daring people” for invading his seas and domains that had never been crossed.

Christmas also allowed us to create moments of dialogue, writing texts, postcards and reading Christmas legends.

Students creativity was also highlighted by instigate them to create recycled materials.

The Legend Book

INTRODUCTION Portuguese discoveries are the numerous territories and maritime routes recorded by the Portuguese as a result of their intensive maritime exploration during the 15th and 16th centuries. Portuguese sailors were at the vanguard of European exploration, mapping the coasts of Africa and Asia, then known as the East Indies, and Canada and Brazil (the West Indies), in what came to be known as the Age of Discovery. Expeditions started in 1419 along West Africa's coast under the sponsorship of prince Henry the Navigator, with Bartolomeu Dias reaching the Cape of Good Hope and entering the Indian Ocean in 1488. Ten years later, in 1498, Vasco da Gama led the first fleet around Africa to India, arriving in Calicut and starting a maritime route from Portugal to India. Portuguese explorations then proceeded to southeast Asia, where they reached Japan in 1542, forty-four years after their first arrival in India. In 1500, the Portuguese nobleman Pedro Álvares Cabral became the first European to discover Brazil.

A long time ago, in the year 1385, King Fernando of Portugal fell seriously ill. In his bed, he tortured himself with the fact that he had not had a baron son. He was concerned about the future of his country, since his only daughter had married the King of Spain. The king felt worse every day and one day he called his Counselor. - My faithful Counselor, I have a mission for you! I anticipate problems for Portugal with my death. The country's independence is compromised. I fear we will be invaded by Spain! - Your Highness is very weak and pessimistic, but I know that when you worry it is a serious matter! - Yes! Listen to me! I have a mission for you. You must look for a person who is a legend, a hero, because only he will save us! When the king's Counselor retired to his quarters, he was extremely worried. First of all, he was worried about the threat of Spanish invasion. It was a real possibility. Second, we thought: where would I suddenly find this hero, this legend? That night, he rolled from side to side on the bed and didn't sleep. However, the king could not sleep either. He took a bunch of papers, his pen and started to write, writing without stopping despite his trembling hands.
