About Digital Books from Home

The goal of the BCS elementary library is to ensure that all materials reflect the mission of BCS. Every effort is made to protect students in regards to exposure to inappropriate materials.

As we build our digital resources to allow students to access books during the distance learning experience, BCS has relied on outside companies who have generously provided free access to books for our community.

However, the books in these collections have not been hand picked by our BCS staff. Therefore, there are many books that do not reflect a biblical worldview. As a result, we ask parents to discern which books your child should or should not read, just as you would when you go to a bookstore, order books online, or visit the public library.

Resources to help you and your child choose a book

The following resources can help you discern if books are appropriate for your child. Simply look up the title in each site. (Note: not all books are searchable in all platforms)
1. Common Sense Media - search for the title and if a review has been done on the book, it will describe any questionable content in the book. This is not a Christian site. However, it gives good information to discern if the book is appropriate for the reader.
2. Plugged In-This is Focus on the Family's site. It's not a huge database. But it is helpful. (We also recommend this site to look up movies and shows before viewing).
3. Amazon-When you search for a book on Amazon, if you scroll down and read the reviews you can frequently learn a lot about the book since parents and teachers may post their opinions and concerns about the book.

There are many other book review sites. However, these are the ones your BCS library staff use the most frequently to make sure the books in our collection are appropriate for BCS students.

Shorter picture books are easy enough for a parent to preview. The sites above are most helpful for chapter books.

Resource #1 Hoopla Digital Library

Did you know that you can access the Hoopla Library by using your Broward County Library Card? Hoopla is great because there are no waitlists for books. Be sure to filter the books by choosing "Children's Titles" to ensure your child is not choosing from every book available.

Resource #2 Epic

You should have received an invitation from Mrs. Schwab to join Epic.
Epic has thousands of books including AR books. You can use Epic on your computer or on a device after downloading the app. The classroom code for our BCS Library is:

Resource #3 Tumblebooks

Tumblebooks is a K-6 ebook database. It is available through an app on devices and on your computer.

Resource #4 Audible Kids

Audible is offering free stories for children to listen to as long as schools are closed.

Audible Stories can be accessed from virtually anywhere. On your computer, tablet, or smartphone, just navigate to stories.audible.com. Make sure you are using the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge browsers. No login, no payments, and no strings attached!

Is it good for my child to listen to stories?

Note: Listening to audiobooks is not "cheating". Reading isn’t just about looking at the words on the page or hearing words as they’re being read. It’s about processing, imagining, and understanding. Science has shown those processes are similar whether reading with your eyes, your ears, or your fingers.
