red wood
rain wood

Chloe O'Loughlin
Thick, far reaching, immense
Roots digging deep, bark breaking
They call it “red” wood.
Roots digging deep, bark breaking
They call it “red” wood.

Rain beats down upon my leaves
Pitter, patter, until each drop shatters
A stream of life gathers in my weave
Making it hard not to reprieve
All until the sky becomes dry
No more pitter, patter until I begin to cry
Revive the water to drop a little longer
My branches spare just enough to share
Down below, where my roots grow low
The quivering returns from heights far beyond the clouds
As long as I am able
I will do all I can to keep this earth stable.
