1red wood
rain wood
Chloe O'Loughlin
Chloe O'Loughlin
Thick, far reaching, immense
Roots digging deep, bark breaking
They call it “red” wood.
Roots digging deep, bark breaking
They call it “red” wood.

Rain beats down upon my leaves
Pitter, patter, until each drop shatters
A stream of life gathers in my weave
Making it hard not to reprieve
All until the sky becomes dry
No more pitter, patter until I begin to cry
Revive the water to drop a little longer
My branches spare just enough to share
Down below, where my roots grow low
The quivering returns from heights far beyond the clouds
As long as I am able
I will do all I can to keep this earth stable.
Pitter, patter, until each drop shatters
A stream of life gathers in my weave
Making it hard not to reprieve
All until the sky becomes dry
No more pitter, patter until I begin to cry
Revive the water to drop a little longer
My branches spare just enough to share
Down below, where my roots grow low
The quivering returns from heights far beyond the clouds
As long as I am able
I will do all I can to keep this earth stable.

sequoia
Lili Bazargan
sequoia stands tall
having been through it all
during the winter, snow wraps her like a blanket
during the spring, birds nest on her branches
during the summer, her roots are dry and parched
and during the fall, her leaves depart
for 3,000 years, her heart has been beating
at 300 feet, she’s watched life go by
to her, our days are fleeting
she takes the hits of mother nature and keeps breathing
last winter, her brother passed away
his jagged corpse stares at her every day
and when the flames roll in every other year
she keeps up her armor and braves them without fear
sequoia holds onto history
every year of her life etched in memory
and even when the day of her death arrives
the rings of her past will tell stories of past lives

Lili Bazargan
at 1,900 feet, you feel invincible
standing at the precipice
below you, endless falling water
yet, you feel humbled
deafening roar in your ears
the world screaming in your face
hitting you with tears
telling you to change your ways
if you don’t, it might just run dry
empty, the world will die
standing at the precipice
below you, endless falling water
yet, you feel humbled
deafening roar in your ears
the world screaming in your face
hitting you with tears
telling you to change your ways
if you don’t, it might just run dry
empty, the world will die
