Charlie gave some great responses for both sides and expanded on the idea of social responsibility in detail 

The children looked at propaganda art and discussed what it meant and who it was for. They chose a particular area to focus on and looked at the range of propaganda from the time. They used collage techniques on IT to create a combination poster. 

We designed their own medals having researched and looked at examples from World War 2. We discussed why people were given them and looked at famous examples. 

We researched air raid shelters and looked at an augmented reality Anderson Shelter to explore the interior and exterior design

We designed and created painted glass jars to join a Remembrance Day display with other local schools.

We created timelines of key events that led up to the start of WW2 then looked at a map of Europe to identify the countries that were invaded by Germany. We discussed allies and why the location of the countries made them most likely to be invaded. 

We visited the Imperial War Museum where we found out about the impact and experiences of World War 2 and other times of conflict. We spoke to war veterans and made our own documentaries about artefacts in the museum. We then visited the Stockport Air Raid shelters and found out all about life for people in Stockport and what an air raid would’ve been like. 

We made sketches of poppies using pencil techniques, adding shading and colour with chalk pastels.

We explored WW2 artefacts in groups and discussed what we thought they were for and what information they gave us about life at the time. We then found out all about the objects and compared them to our original ideas. 

My favourite one is the one from Georgia Okleffe because hers has an orangey tint,it’s colourful and it’s very detailed

I like the Monet one because everything there is full of colours and they took up the whole space of it and you can really see a lot of things.

Year 5 Term: Autumn 2021

Transform a matchbox into a realistic WW2 artefact using a range of materials.

We researched Make do and mend and discussed what it means and how it would’ve impacted life at the time and what it would be like now. 

We then designed our own teddy bears to make out of repurposed fabric and made prototypes.

We designed our own air raid shelters having researched Anderson and Morrison ones. They had to fit a Lego man inside, bear the weight of a water bottle and also be waterproof. 

Session 7 History We did a workshop virtually with the National Holocaust Museum and find out about the life of a young, Jewish and German boy. We looked at artefacts and asked questions to find out more about them. We heard stories from survivors of the concentration camps and about their lives as children before the war started. We have also followed Leo’s journey using the National Holocaust Museum app which explores key events in the run up to World War 2 for the Jewish people.

We were researching, selecting, collecting, assembling, cutting, tearing, sticking, layering and collaging to create work from a variety of found and created resources;
