Teaching experience reflections

Block 1- Grade 9
My student teaching experience has been a great learning, inspiring and
informational experience. Generally I had a positive time with the learners and
had built a rapport with them. My mentor was very supportive in helping me with
the learners. Mr Cwaile, my Senior phase mentor, gave me the confidence I
needed to keep progressing. Interacting with my SP learners was fantastic
as they were very helpful with everyday things in the classroom by showing me how things were done. There were three parts of my teaching experience that were the most important strengths which were building
with the learners, planning for the lessons and time management.
Although I was worried about one of my classes earlier on, I got to know the learners a little better and formed relationships with them, most of
the problems vanished. I was able to create a positive and great atmosphere in the classroom which enabled effective learning to take
place. Once the connection and the rapport between myself and the learners was established I could see that they started to pay more
attention to what I was teaching them and they started to ask more questions about Life Orientation. My relationship with the learners are not the only relationships that developed. I also managed to build strong supportive relationships with the staff of Thuso Thebe secondary school. I sustained a great working relationship with my mentor
as well as other teachers in the humanities department.
Another aspect that went well as time went on for me during this teaching experience
was planning and time management. My schedule was of a great help to me as I
had several off periods. This allowed me to plan. Make copies and mark
assessments I a timely manner. The planning of my lessons went fairly well. My
mentor took his time to show me how he goes about planning lessons and his
advice came in to be very valuable to me. During my planning I also had the
school resources at my disposal which made my planning easy. My time management
skills have greatly improved over the course of my first block. At the
beginning of my teaching experience I would often find myself overwhelmed by
all the work load, however towards the end of the block I was able to get
everything that I needed to all done and sometimes even work ahead of myself.
The
biggest and most important thing that I learned during the teaching experience
is to be confident. In the beginning I was a little intimidated by the
learners. After a few more weeks I started to feel more comfortable in front of
the class. I have learned that learners are more likely to pay attention and
listen to you when you come in with the positive and confident manner. After I
gained confidence in the class, I started to have fun with teaching and
learners enjoyed my lessons as well. I believe that once I gained confidence
the learners could sense that and did better in class and also helped with
classroom management. Respect for myself and for my learners as well translates
to positive relationships with learners. I learned that respect and confidence
will go a long way in terms of connecting and maintaining relationships with my
learners, which enhances the classroom atmosphere and performance.
Classroom management
was another area that I learned a lot about during my student teaching. Senior
phase are very impressionable and they require a lot of management and
guidance. They tend to be impulsive and are very quick to express themselves
with action. Through building relationships with these young ones, classroom
management closely correlates with it as improvements happen as relationships
get better. The learners got to respect and listen to me more, the classroom
distractions and negative behaviours became less and less .The advice I received
from my TE supervisor proved to be very helpful in classroom management. My
supervisor adviced, after noticing that learners fidget and make noise while I
was busy writing on the board, that I write key words on the board at the
beginning of the lesson so that the learners don’t lose focus with my back
turned to them. With that strategy I was able to grab their attention right through
to the end of the lesson. All in all my teaching

help to propel me as I enter the teaching profession. It has evoked in me the
spirit of wanting to learn and experiment with new techniques and strategies.
Block 2-Grade 11 teaching experience

The second block of
my teaching experience was in a Grade 11 class. I had gained some confidence
and a bit of experience from the first block. I was able to get the learner’s
attention, however there were some days where it would take some time to get
their attention. In future I would like to establish some quick techniques to
get their attention. I have seen my mentor teacher, Mrs. Rulashe uses the ‘clap
once if you hear me (claps); clap twice if you can hear me (claps).’ I have
seen that learners respond well to this stimulating technique. I would also
like to work on giving clearer directions in the future. I created classroom
management problems for myself when I failed to give clear instructions. Learners would be confused and chatting to their neighbours to try and figure out what to do or they would all at once ask a lot of questions so
I couldn’t hear them.
This is an aspect that I would do differently.
