This coffee grinder is from the 18th centuries, before it was made coffee beans were first crushed by a pestle and mortar which was really time consuming, then sometime between 1657 and 1659 an English man called Nicholas Brook made mills for grinding the coffee beans to powder.
This artifact was mainly made out of iron and wood.
Coffee could be grown anywhere that is warm like the tropicals, but it was first found in Ethiopia. It was the 11th century when a goat herder named Kaldi saw his goat getting excited after eating some berries from a tree...
This artifact inspired my story because at New France having a coffee shop was a good business for women.

Once there was a girl named Maria, she lived in a poor family which used to own a small business. As years went by Maria grew up, she dreamed of being in America with her own family, following her dream she signed up to be one of the “king’s daughter”— Filles du Roi.
Days went by like weeks and Maria didn’t get any information about her journey to New France. It was a sunny day, Maria was going to the market square when she saw a letter in her mailbox inviting her to New France as the Filles du Roi. She hurried back to House and packed her belongings, which isn’t much at all. As she was packing, she discovered a coffee grinder that was from her grandfather. The coffee grinder was made out of wood and iron, Maria carefully put the coffee grinder in one of her luggage and along with the coffee beans.

It was early in the morning when Maria was hopping on to the ship, she said goodbye to her family in France as the ship sailed away. Just as Maria expected, the journey to the west was long and hard, some of her friends got sick and passed away. Finally, they reached New France, where she was taken straight to a cabin. Waiting as Maria’s friends met their love of their lives, Maria was looking for someone who has the land to help her plant her coffee beans. It was not long before Maria met John, a busy farmer who would love to help Maria with her business.

Maria then later married to John and had 5 kids. John, who is also a skilled engineer, helped Maria make more coffee grinders just like to one Maria brought to New France. Digging at the bottom of their wallets, they got enough money to build a small coffeehouse at the market square. As time went by Maria’s coffee house got popular in New France, people like businessmen would come to the coffee house and have conversations there. Maria had to expand the coffee house in order to fit more customers in, and with John, he hired people to help at the coffee bean farm and some to help Maria at the coffee house.
Life was going great until Maria got very ill, it had turned out that she has cancer. John had used half of their fortunes on her medical care, and their business is dying down. One day, Maria got so sick that she couldn't get up from her bed. She called her oldest son, who is currently taking care of her coffee house, over and said to him, “Oh son I love you very much, but I don't have much time left, I please you to take care of yourself, our family, and our coffee house while I'm gone.”

Her son stood there staring at Maria and agreed to take on with the business.
The next few days were hard for Maria, because she didn’t know if her loving son is old enough to handle the hard choices he would have to make. But she was relieved that someone will keep her business going while she is resting in peace.

Sophia Wu is a student in the Performance Learning Program at Seycove Secondary. She first became interested in Canadian History in grade 6 when her teacher showed her a a film about Canadian history. Although Emily has not worked extensively with artifacts from New France, she was intrigued by the artifact of the Coffee Grinder when reading about settlement and colonization on the East Coast in the 1670’s. Sophia developed this story built around a character she developed herself. In her free time, Sophia practice video games and read, and can often be at her laptop and iPad at her home in North Vancouver, British Columbia.

Sophia dreamed to be in a gaming group called “Click” which her role model Harley Campbell is in. As for right now she is looking for a way to communicate with Click and work towards her goal of being a professional gamer. Even though her parents would not like her working as a professional gamer, nothing will stop her from chasing her dream.
