Our vision at Hornby High School is to be a CENTRE OF CREATIVE EXCELLENCE - he puna auaha. It would be a little odd to make such a claim if we didn’t then celebrate the wide range of creative aspiration, endeavour, and product, generated by our wonderful rangatahi. We do so in many ways.

This collection of student poetry (some original; some chosen) around the time of the 2022 World Poetry Day is one such celebration. The original works (and those selected from other sources) are many and varied, collated by akonga of all ages and cultures from across our kura.

We hope you enjoy reading these poems as they offer an insight into the poetic works and preferences of our rangatahi.

TIME TICKING

Time Ticking
Cold breeze.
Clock ticking along
with keyboards typing
Loud silence
broken by murmurs.
Heavy sighs are
to be heard.

Students yawning and complaining
“AHH, halfway there”
Is in everyone’s thoughts.
Time is ticking
School is yet to be over
Three more hours and we’re
set free.

KINDNESS

Ah, kindness!
What a simple way
To tell
Another struggling
Soul
That there is love
In the world

I CAN

I can see the trees moving
in the wind.
I can feel the wind blowing
around me
I can taste the fresh air
I can smell the blossoms on the
tree
I can hear the birds singing

Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. LIES

A mere child shall be upfront, yet its guardians
show otherwise.
Children are told lies, yet simply cannot utter one
Questions are asked, yet they tend to be lied
to without showing guilt
sincere and honest, yet it cannot be
reciprocated.
Threatened with fear all built up using
lies, yet is trusted by an innocent child.
