Inquiry Based Learning Reflective Journal
Week 1
What Does Inquiry Mean to Me?
I found the word inquiry hard to comprehend at first. However, in class I learnt what it was through talk and discussion. I also had to google the meaning and look for examples in the classroom setting for further understanding. I found many different articles and definitions.

For me, Inquiry based learning (IBL) is looking beneath the surface through questioning, investigating, observing, and analysing. This means wondering about the world around you and asking further questions.
As a teacher it's my responsibility to use IBL to spark the interest and curiosity of the child and increase their critical thinking. It's a student-centered pedagogical approach that enables the learners to take more of the responsibility themselves when it comes to learning. (Bonnstetter 1998; Kuhlthau and Maniotes, 2015).
“Inquiry is a stance that underlies our approach
to living as learners, both within and outside
of school.”
Kathy Short (2009).

My Inquiry Based Questions
1. Why Did My Oven Explode Out of Nowhere?
1. Why did my oven explode out of nowhere?
2. Why does shopping make me feel good?
3. Why do I click with some people and not others?
4. Why do I always want what I cant have?
For some context, my oven exploded today during my lunch while cooking some salmon. Out of nowhere, the oven glass door shattered.
It got me thinking why my oven shattered...
According to my research, there seems to be no reason as to why my oven shattered. It could have been because of a fault in the electrician system or the glass.
My question was left unanswered.

2. Why Does Shopping Make me Feel Good?
This question was sparked by days shopping after a tough day of work. Shopping releases so much dopamine but why?
The psychologist Dr Beau (Brain & Spine, 2021) backs ups my positive feelings that come with shopping “Whether you’re adding items to your shopping cart online or visiting your favorite boutique for a few hours, you do get a psychological and emotional boost.” A 2014 study from the Journal of Consumer Psychology (Brain & Spine, 2021) states that shopping decisions can help reinforce a sense of personal control over the environment because of the choice. It can give immediate happiness and can fight lingering sadness. This explains the stress relief I feel when shopping. Dr Beau (Brain & Spine, 2021) also states that dopamine isn't just released when you purchase an item but is also released by browsing and window shopping.
From reading this article (Brain & Spine, 2021), I also learnt a new shopping technique that I will apply to my shopping. I can use anticipation more by saving up for an item over the course of a few weeks or months and then buy it which according to Dr Beau releases more dopamine than an impulse purchase.
I have been left satisfied as I know the element of choice and freedom releases dopamine as throughout a day of work or college there isn't as many options.
