This Mathematical Dictionary is a joint product of students who worked on the international eTwinning project "WIM - World In Math" during the school year 2020/2021.&nbsp; It contains a number of mathematical concepts that we used during our work. On each page there is a collection of concepts related to a certain mathematical topic. If you click on the appropriate link, you can read, but also hear how certain terms sound in Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian, Spanish, Greek, Italian, Turkish or Romanian language.

Math Dictionary

The main idea of this project is to connect the world around us with the main topics from Geometry. At the same time, we would like to connect with schools all around Europe and to learn about their countries, home places, customs, history and traditions. This book documents our work.

eTwinning project

In this topic we would like to see examples of central and axial symmetry not only in your towns and cities but also in your national art. Perhaps you could show us famous artwork that displays symmetry. Even traditional folk costumes, tapestry, sculptures. Whatever you believe has symmetry.&nbsp;

Fractions, percentages, proportions and data processing

Take photos of famous building in your town. Can these buildings be divided into ratios? Can you discover the Golden ratio in these proportions? Have you heard of the Vitruvian man? The image was created by Leonardo da Vinci around the year 1487 and it provides a perfect example of Leonardo's keen interest in proportion. Could your students test the theory of the Vitruvian man amongst themselves? Thus finding mathematics not only around them but within them. Collect certain statistics&nbsp;about your place, your team or something else, or anything else that will help us to know you better!

Polygons have been contributing to human architecture since the days of the great pyramids. They still form the heart of modern architecture and design.&nbsp; Basic polygons provide the most stable foundations of buildings and are still utilized in modern construction and architecture.&nbsp; Can you find examples of polygons in your town center? What shape are they? Can you measure the circumference and area of the town square by using different methods? Be creative and explain why you chose these specific methods.&nbsp; Introduce us to some cultural and historical monuments from your town, showing the polygons that can be seen.&nbsp;

Find examples of: parallel lines in your hometown (playgrounds, windows on important buildings in your town. riverbanks, railway station ...) passing straight lines&nbsp;(bridges and rivers, overpasses...) straight lines that intersect in some important localities or buildings (schools, municipal buildings, cultural institutions ...) mutual position of some important streets in your hometown If there are some important buildings in the same street, for example, you can consider them as points, the street as a straight line and you could talk about collinear and non- collinear points.

Number lines and the Cartesian coordinate system

Now we connect mathematics and the number line with our traditions, heritage and history.&nbsp; The first option we suggest is that you present steps from a traditional dance on a number line or in the Cartesian coordinate system. Each dance step is represented by a point. With these instructions we can actually teach our partners how to dance. The second option is to present famous scientists, artists, scholars or any other significant individuals from your country. Find out their date of birth and year. The day they were born represents the X coordinate, and the month represents the Y coordinate. If the person is deceased, all numbers are negative.&nbsp; The year they were born will be presented on a separate number line.&nbsp; Choose at least five individuals to research and present your findings in a presentation along with the Cartesian coordinate system.&nbsp;

Find some examples of circles in your area on some cultural and&nbsp;historical monuments, churches, places of culture, fountains or even&nbsp;roundabouts.&nbsp; Perhaps you could introduce us to your national dish if it is in the&nbsp;shape of a circle?&nbsp; Are there any famous artworks from your country where circles and spheres are visible? There are endless possibilities.&nbsp;
