Windsor Immigration

Billy interviewed Raad, who immigrated from Iran when he was 3 years old.  His family left because of persecution. They were hoping for a better life in America. They traveled on a plane and brought just clothes with them. They found a lot of other immigrants and settled near them. The biggest challenge was for his family was learning English.  Raad went to school in America and was treated just like other kids. 

Gerasimos interviewed Marina Caribacas who immigrated from Greece when she was 16 years old in 1963. Martina came for a better life, more job opportunities, and more education. She arrived by plane in January. It was harsh and the coldest time of the year. She brought clothes, pictures of family to remember.

Maddie interviewed Bridget who immigrated from Ireland when she was 27 years old.  She came for an adventure and more opportunities.  She was hoping for a better life in the United States.  Bridget came over on a ship with terrible conditions.  It was crowded with little food, and a lot of sickness.  The most challenging part was leaving her family behind. 

Alicia interviewed her Dad, Rafal, who immigrated from Poland when he was 26 years old.  He left Poland to explore another country and to learn English. Rafal did attend school in America. The most challenging part was understanding people.

Milly interviewed her Lola And Lolo who moved here from the Philippines.  Lolo was 27 yrs.old and Lola was 21 yrs. old. Lolo’s family wanted to find jobs that provided more money and opportunities. Lola wanted to be with family. Lolo went to city college and Lola did not attend school here. The most challenging part for Lolo was work. He had a hard job. The biggest challenge for Lola was improving her speaking English.

Cameron interviewed Stella Cele who immigrated from Poland when she was 15 years old.  She wanted to come to America and her brother was already living here.  Stella didn’t want to work on a farm and wanted a better life here. She traveled here by boat, Prince Eugen that left from Bremen.  It took two weeks to arrive at Ellis Island. Stella did not attend school in America.

Patrycja interviewed her mother.  Her mom came from Poland when she was 23 years old.  She moved here to look for a better future and hoped for a good life. her mom went to school in America and was treated well.

Isaac interviewed his Uncle Isaac, who he is named after.  Isaac came to America from England when he was 19 years old. He wanted a better life, job, and money.  He traveled by boat and it was a long trip.  He became a postmaster.

Miriam interviewed her Dad, Vicente.  He moved here from Durango, Mexico when he was 19 years old.  He needed a better job and hoped he could give his parents a better life by sending them money.  It was very hard to settle here since he does not speak English.  Without speaking English, it was hard to get a job. He did not go to school here since his parents didn’t have enough money to pay for his school studies. 

Sam interviewed Grace who came to America from Guatemala when she was 14 months old. Her family left Guatemala since it was no longer safe.  They traveled by plane. They were hoping for a safe, loving, and supporting system. There was some racial stigma but not bad. Grace attended school here and felt out of place. Most people treated her well.

Charlie interviewed Veronica Jung who immigrated from South Korea when she was 15 years old.   She moved for economic reasons and hoped for a better life and education. Her biggest challenge was the language. She was treated fair and kindly.

Matthew interviewed his mom, Agnes, who immigrated from Poland when she was 1 year old. Agnes’s parents wanted better jobs and hoped for more opportunities for their children than what was available in Poland. They moved close to family in America. One of the hardest things to do was to leave friends in Poland. Agnes only brought two suitcases with her. People treated her well and she made friends.  She felt comfortable living here after 6 months. 

Julia interviewed Anne Ullegue, her Lola. Anne immigrated from the Philippines when she was 24 years old. Her family moved to get better jobs and a better education.  She traveled by airplane. 

Damian interviewed his mom, Kathy.  She came to America from Poland when she was 20 years old, hoping for a better life and better job.  Kathy’s flight here was 10 hours long. She brought clothes and her favorite books.

Paul shared that his Grandmother Marie DeMartino  Marie lived in Moladi, in Bari, Italy.  She was 8 years old when her family came to America. Jobs were hard to find in Italy, so they hoped for better jobs and more opportunities in the United States. 

Nikki interviewed her mother about Grandma, Marie De Martino who immigrated from Italy when she was eight. Her family moved here for better jobs and a better life for their family and more opportunities. They filled a trunk with whatever they could bring. Marie took a boat to Ellis Island and got seasick. She then rode the train to Chicago. Marie, her mom, dad, and three siblings moved into her Aunt’s house in Elmwood Park. 

Matt interviewed his Mom who came to America from South Korea when she was 14 years old. She was hoping for a better life and good schools.  The plane ride was very long.  She attended Mead Middle School.  It was hard since she didn’t speak English as a teenager. Expletive mistreated her because of the language barrier. 

Mina interviewed Viara Angelov and Aleks Bandic. Viara immigrated from Bulgaria when she was 20 years old. Alex immigrated from Serbia when he was 32 years old. Viara left Bulgaria because she won the lottery for a green card.  She wanted the experience of a new culture. Viara was hoping for financial independence, to meet new people, and have a better life. Aleks left because of the war and to find peace for himself and his family. 

Matina settled in Chicago where the people were welcoming and helpful. The most challenging parts were being away from friends and not knowing the language. She wasn’t dressed for the weather which was very icy.  The life style was challenging. It was very fast paced. In Greece it was slow paced. 

She attended night school at Austin High School to learn English. People were accepting and friendly. Matina made friends her first year, who came from other countries. 

Brynn interviewed Grace who immigrated to America from Mexico. Grace was 17 years old and wanted to learn English and become a secretary to have a better life. She brought a Mexican doll that was handmade to remind her of Mexico.  People were good to her and nice.  They helped her settle here 

Kieran interviewed his father, Daragh, who moved here from Ireland. He was 23 years old and wanted to start a new business in America. Daragh was hoping to have a better life. Because he came from a popular country, spoke English, and was educated, things went well and he found a job quickly. It was difficult to adjust to the American way of doing everything.

Being an immigrant wasn’t bad because we already had family living here. The hardest part was leaving my family and friends.  She was treated very nicely. Everyone congratulated her for coming to America. She came with her husband because she was pregnant Nissan interviewed her mother, Saraswah, who immigrated from Nepal when she was 30 years old. 

She left Nepal because she received a Visa and wanted her children to have a better life. She hoped for a good life an good school/ life for her children. Traveling to America was fantastic! She brought pots, clothes, and shoes. I was going to ask my husband to go to Nepal.ith Nissan and wanted to have a better life for everyone. 

Molly interviewed her Grandpa.  Her great, great Grandparents came from Poland. They came for a better life, job, and education.  They traveled by boat with only two suitcases. 

Anthony Leo interviewed Magdalena who immigrated from Poland when she was 6 1/2 years old. Her family hoped for a better life and education. Her mom packed clothes and a stuffy for Magdalena.  The most challenging part was speaking English, and leaving friends and family.

Andrew interviewed his Great Grandmother Irene Gnoyke who immigrated from Germany when she was 28 years old.  She is now 98. Her father was living in America and there was a war in Germany, so they came over.  They hoped to be closer to family. Irene took a plane over and the flight was good. They only brought clothing. She found a job easily and they bought a small apartment. The biggest challenges were not speaking English and not knowing where stuff was. Irene didn’t attend school here, but Andrew’s Grandparents did. People were kind and always helped them.

Anthony interviewed Edith who came to America from Poland when she was 12 years old.  Her family moved for more opportunities for their kids and more opportunities for jobs. They were hoping for life to be easier, for not wanting so much, and to support the family. Edith’s flight was long and tiring, but also exciting to see her father after a year. The most challenging parts were trying to speak English and make new friends.

Mike interviewed Christopher Carmody who immigrated from Ireland when he was 20 years old.  Christopher came to America to live with his brother and find work.  He hoped he would find a job and be happy. He came with one suitcase and money. He did not go to school in America. People were very kind and nice to Christopher. 

The hardest thing was not being able to speak English. She was on her own in learning because she spoke a different language.  She changed her name from Maria Giovanna Anacterio to Marie Joann. 

It was hard in the first year because of the language barrier, then finding a place to work and not knowing how to drive. There was no one to help and Aleks had to establish everything from the beginning. Viara attended Triton and Cumberland College of Nursing.  Aleks did not attend school in America.

Connor interviewed James Kerrigan who immigrated from Ireland when he was 24 years old. He left Ireland for a better life and he wanted better opportunities.  He brought warm winter clothes to stay warm. The most challenging thing was moving away from his family. He did not attend school in America. 

Amy interviewed her Mom, Sonia Murillo. She immigrated from Mexico when she was 18 years old.  Her family hoped for a good future in America and to learn new things.  They also wanted to see what America looks like.  Sonia came by airplane and the flight was fun. She brought her clothes, shoes, and most importantly, her heart. The most challenging part was the language. She did attend school here.  Sonia likes it here and has been treated kindly.

They took a boat to Ellis Island then a train to Chicago. They brought a trunk full of things that were important like clothes.  They moved into the basement of their Aunt’s house until they got a job. 

The biggest challenge was not being able to speak English and communicate.  Marie attended school as a third grader.  Some people didn’t treat her nicely because she didn’t speak English.  Her maiden name was Maria Giovanna Anaclerio.  Marie did go back to Italy for a visit when she was twenty. 

Victor interviewed his mother, Petya, who immigrated from Bulgaria when she was 21 years old. She came for better opportunities and to have fun.  Her hope was to experience things she had never experienced before.  Petya’s biggest challenge was leaving friends and family.  She has been treated kindly and feels safe. 

Taran interviewed his mother, Dana McGibbon, who immigrated from South Korea when she was 17 years old.  He moved to America to be with other family members, a better life, and better opportunities. When she came here, she packed personal items that were special to the family and Korean handmade furniture. The hardest challenge was the language and lifestyle.

Nissan interviewed her mother, Saraswah, who immigrated from Nepal when she was 30 years old  she left Nepal because she received a Visa and wanted her children to have a better life.  She hoped for a good life an good school/ life for her children. Traveling to America was fantastic! She brought pots, clothes, and shoes. I was going to ask my husband to go to Nepal.
