Paul shared that his Grandmother Marie DeMartino Marie lived in Moladi, in Bari, Italy. She was 8 years old when her family came to America. Jobs were hard to find in Italy, so they hoped for better jobs and more opportunities in the United States.

They took a boat to Ellis Island then a train to Chicago. They brought a trunk full of things that were important like clothes. They moved into the basement of their Aunt’s house until they got a job.
The biggest challenge was not being able to speak English and communicate. Marie attended school as a third grader. Some people didn’t treat her nicely because she didn’t speak English. Her maiden name was Maria Giovanna Anaclerio. Marie did go back to Italy for a visit when she was twenty.
