Appearance

Tigers, which are recognised by their distinctive appearance, have adapted many features to enable them to survive in their environment. They are large mammals and can grow to approximately 4 metres long and 1 metre high. In addition, they weigh between 75 and 300 kilograms. These felines are covered in thick, orange fur with dark, vertical stripes. As a result, they are camouflaged in jungle areas with long grass, so they cannot be detected by potential prey. However, their colouring varies depending on the area in which they inhabit.

These creatures have long, sharp claws (up to 10cm). Therefore, they can grip uneven terrain and climb trees. Moreover, these retractable claws are used for grasping animals and ripping flesh. Many of these features allow the tiger to catch and consume its prey.

Tigers are predators, which hunt and eat a range of prey. Furthermore, they are carnivores so their diet consists entirely of meat from animals. The majority of these large cats' diets are large-bodied mammals: deer, wild pigs and buffalo. However, when this type of prey is not obtainable, they eat smaller creatures (such as lizards, birds and rodents), other predators' kills and carrion.

Due to a depletion in food available, tigers are occasionally forced to kill livestock from farms. Consequently, humans often kill tigers in retaliation.

In conclusion, these magnificent felines have many interesting features, which allow them to be an accomplished predators in the wild. Tigers inhabit a diverse range of environments across the continent of Asia. However, tigers face a number of threats such as: habitat loss, increase in human population and poaching.
Consequently, they have been classified as an endangered species. As a result, conservationists and governments are working together to change laws and protect tigers. Hopefully, population numbers will increase and there will be a more positive future for these iconic creatures.
