A SHORT HISTORY OF MALTA
The history of Malta is truly remarkable, therefore, in such a small area you can admire the monuments of many times. There are souvenirs of prehistoric times (Megalithic temples – on the UNESCO list of objects), Phoenician, Roman (e.g. in Xemxija the Roman road is preserved in good condition), the beginnings of Christianity (St. Paul, catacombs, etc.), the times of the Order of the Knights of St. John (order of Malta – the order operating to this day), the famous defense of Malta against the Turkish siege.
Then there were French and then British times, including World War II, until independence on September 21, 1964 (with Elizabeth II as Queen).
